Has anyone ever seen a steering mechanism like the one in the 2nd picture at the related link? Edson has never seen one like this. It is on my 1978 C30 which does have much hardware related to racing. Thanks in advance. Steve

c30 steering

I have a wheel system on my '82 C30 that looks like the above deck part of yours. It is made by the now defunct Yacht Specialties. I have found no one that carries any parts. My below deck part has quadrant with cables that turn the rudder post. What are you looking to do? I see one part that is broken - any good machine shop can fix you up. Even if some of the castings are broken/worn a good shop can weld and re-machine

Yacht Specialties

Thanks for your response. Edson did correctly identify the above deck parts as a Yacht Specialties product. The mechanism underneath has no pulleys/cables but is a solid shaft with a universal joint and direct connection to the quadrant. Edson said they had never seen anything like this and thought it must be a custom job. The wheel system functions flawlessly. I was curious if anyone had encountered this type of mechanism before.

Steve, I have a 78 Hull # 834 with that exact steering mechanism. It is very robust but does not have much feel. It also employs a little slop in the wheel but otherwise works great. I tried to install the edison pedestal engine controls but they will not fit on that pedestal.

Don Allen Steering

Thanks for your replies. It turns out that this is a Don Allen Inc. wheel/pedestal/rack&pinion steering system. I obtained the brochure from Catalina. Apparently they installed these on several production boats. Naturally Don Allen is out of business. Their former address was: Don Allen Inc. Marine Products 1427 S. Pacific Ave. San Pedro, CA 90731 213-833-3341

what service by Catalina !!

Show me another boat builder who could find you info on one of their boats which is over 25 years old ! That's one reason Catalinas are great !
