I used the search tool on this forum but found no other owners with my problem. The molded toe-rails on our C30 mkII have the staunchions mounted right through them and presumably water has gotten into the wood core. When the winter freeze-up occurs, the top edge of the rail is splitting, which will probably make the problem worse next year, but by then I hope to have it all fixed up..

any advice from experienced hands?

I had some similar problems I found during the restoration process, but without the breakage. I had areas that were soft due to core rot.

What I would do were I you, is to drill through the gel coat and find out if core rot is indeed your problem. If so, clean out the rotten wood, and fill it with epoxy. Don Casey has a really good series of articles on how to properly drill through the decks and how to seal, to prevent this type of problem. I recommend you search on this site to see if you can find these or similar articles.

Good luck, it really isn't too bad of a job to do.
