Hi. I am considering installing a new bilge pump on my 1986 Catalina 30. Right now, I am looking at one of the Rule pumps - either the 1500GPH or the 2000GPH. Looking for what other folks are using and if you know anything about these two pumps or have opinions on other pumps. Additionally, there seems to be just as many bilge pump switches as there are bilge pumps! Some are built-in, other are floats with mercury, floats withhout mercury, air pressure and current sensing. I looked at a switch called the "Bilge Buddy" which has two metal prongs that sit in the bilge. When the water reaches the prongs, an electrical circuit is completed, the switch closes and the bilbge pump is turned on. Has anyone used this (or this type) of switch? Any recommendations on other switches to consider? Thanks for your help! David Garrison Seattle, WA s/v Kindred spirit

Bilge Pump

I have the Rule 2000 on my '82 C30. Bigger capacity is better with that particular device, so install the one with the largest capacity that you can accomodate/afford. I have the separate Rule float switch. And with that device, simpler may be better than more complex. Practical Sailor would be a good resource for evaluating bilge pumps and switch performance. Past reviews are available for purchase from their web site, and could be money well spent.
