I have heard/read, more than once, of a chain plate modification and/or "U" bolt installation recommended for the C27. I have recently noticed evidence of leakage around my port chain plate. (I have the dinette layout.) I want to do a thorough job of checking out and making repair as necessary. How can I tell if the mod is already in place? If it is not, where do I get the required parts and what do I need to know before I start? Should I leave this job for the Marina service dept or is it something I can do myself? Should the mast come down or can it be done leaving it up? Any advice, recommendations, and /or suggestions, especially the “be sure you don’t” advice, would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Lysle

Ok, a couple of quick answers for you. There is no real chainplate upgrade, although some have customized a setup. If your chainplates are leaking you must check the bulkheads. After all these years and water intrustion they likely have rotted out and need replacing. I did this myself, others have had the yard do it. U bolt or eye bolt...well the easiest way to tell is to look at the shroud to deck connection and see if it's a U bolt or not. Perhaps you should have a look at the catalina direct website to see the pics of the 2. Yes, you can do this mod yourself, but you may have core damage around the area due to water intrusion that may need fixing. I didn't take the mast down for these mods, but others in windier areas have. Check out the www.catalina27.org site specifically the ftp site for some pics. Peter

The U bolt chain plates are for the forward and aft lower shrouds. You can get them from Catalina Direct. They are pretty easy to install. The chain plates for the upper shrouds go through the deck and attach to the port and starboard bulkheads. These are the babies that leak and cause rot in the bulkheads. Replacing the bulkheads is a bit of a task but two people should be able to do it in a weekend.

The info and sites you guys provided were very helpful. Peter, The pictures in the FTP page you mentioned... It looked to me like the lower plates for the Ubolt mod were installed backwards. The lip was inboard. Can/should they be installed with the lip to the outboard side? Again, thanks to all for your replies. Regards, Lysle

backing plate
I don't know off hand which way the plate lip should face. I also don't think it matters. Many owners actually have kept the old backing plates and re-drilled to enlarge the holes since the old backing plates were larger. Peter
