I am thinking of buying a C25 with a swing keel, BUT the slip I have has limited water depth. Does anyone know why I shouldn't be able to keep her at the slip with the keel raised? Are there any maintenance issues with the swing keel I should be aware of? Thanks.

Why Not

Dave i sail a cat 22 with a swing keel. Everything that i have read has said keep it up while at the slip. This keeps more of the keel and the cable out of the salt water and the boat rides (in the slip)just fine with the keel up. After three years i have had no problems with this practice. The 22 should not be any different than the 25 on this issue.

C-25 swing

We have a 25 and leave the swing keel up all the time at the slip. All we do to our swing keel, is change the cable every two years, when we bottom paint. Not a hard job at all..good luck!

kell up

I leave my C22 on a mooring and I have to raise the keel to keep out of the mud at low tide. This also gives the keel support at two points instead of just hanging from the pivot pin. Bobbing on the mooring with the keel down would wear out the pivot pin and/or keel from the motion. The keel down under power does increase stability,(some drag) but at the mooring without anyone on board it doesn't matter.

Keel Up, Zincs

Dave: We also have a C-22, swing keel, and keep the keel up when in the slip, and have for 22 years. This spring I lowered the keel to inspect the pin, and the keel and they were both fine. I feel that the zincs, that I am very fussy about, keep the pin and keel from corroding (galvanicly). Aldo
