I want to install a roller furler on my 1988 Cat22. I am looking at a CDI with 155 Genoa. Some sources say I can not re-use my headstay because of the aircraft eye with thimble. Is this true? What are they talking about? Also, any recommendations on the best selection of furler and sail. thanks!

I installed a Harken from Catalina Direct last year and also was told to replace the head stay. No big deal. The Harken works great if you keep it properly lubed. I went with a 135 head sail. Depends on your usual winds. The 135 seems a good compromise. I think installing the furler takes you out of class racing. I race mixed fleet so it doesn't matter to me. Good luck.

I have a Flexible Furler as well on my 1988 Cat22. I think I have an original head sail on right now. It desperately needs replacement. My suggestionm is that you consider having luff foam installed to make the sail usable when furled in higher wind conditions. I don't and the boat goes right over when the winds kick up because I can't flatten the sail. I am debating the whole purchase of a new sail right now! Catalina direct has an Ulman 135% Roller furler but I don't know how that compares to a Catalina stock version or North's version or...etc... I would love to hear your ideas on a good value RF 135% sail. I am even considering a good used!

CDI is a fine furler
Dan, I had a CDI furler (flexible) on my C22. Worked fine. I don't know what they are telling you either......the turnbuckle arrangement that I had slipped right through the flexible extrusion and through the reel of the furler. Because you can't really check the condition of the forestay, it might not be a bad idea to replace it now.....but I don't see any reason why you would necessarily have to do that. One word of advice....make sure the turnbuckle is secured so that IT CANNOT BACKOFF! It's very exciting if that happens....and it is almost to occur at the most inopportune time. If your hanked head sail is in good shape, just have luff tape installed (probably a #6). I'd do that anyway, just to have available as a second head sail, if you decide to go for a new sail. BUT, a new sail is NOT necessary. Absolutely nothing wrong with a CDI, especially on a boat the size of a C22 -- guarenteed for life....even for "acts of poor seamanship" or something like that. Hi There, I have a CDI flexable roller furler on my 2000 Mark II as well. Works great and I have no complaints. I can understand about the recomendation of replacing a headstay depending on it's age and condition. Remember you are loading more weight and stress directly on it when you install a roller furler. More so then a hanked on one. Think about it !! CDI may also state in the warranty "The condition of the headstay " could very well be a factor in a furler failure . The cost of one isn't that great and if your already investing $700-900.00 in one you might want to consider a new headstay as well if you are not sure that your used one is in perfect condition.
