C22 model years

I am looking to purchase my first sailboat. So far choice seems to be between a Catalina 22, an Oday 22, or Oday 222. It will be a used boat somewhere between 1977 and 1987, and under $5000. Can someone tell me what the significant differences are between these boats. Are the C22 models interior cabin space the same from 77 to 87. And does the Oday 222 have more interior cabin space then the C22 or are they all about the same. What keel types are recommended? Most sailing will be bay sailing.thankscg

cat22 vs oday22

I learned on an Oday 22, then bought a Catalina 22. Both boats sail about the same in light to moderate winds. The Catalina 22 has alot more cockpit space. We can actually seat four grown people in the cockpit of the Catalina and still be able to steer. The Oday could really only seat two, maybe three. Catalina has a swing keel and the Oday has a wing keel. Both heel pretty well with gusts. Other than the cockpit room and ability to trailer the Catalina due to the swing keel, I saw very little differences in both. Catalina's do have 4 extra inner stays to strengthen the mast.

Keels

The Catalina is avalable in 4 different keels...the swing, wing, fixed and the new fixed fin on the MKll... For a bay boat, I would look for a fin or wing keel......

So, there are some not so subtle differences on newer versus older Cat. 22s. On the "newer" Cats, the below decks is a little better in my opinion....and the "newer" have a see through forward hatch which is nice also.I agree w/Randy that if you are bay sailing, I'd have a fixed keel. If you trailer a lot, I'd opt for the wing which didn't come out til Dec (I think) of '86.Good luck,Brad

cg; I had a '76 Cat22 for awhile and a guy down the dock had a much newer one. We both liked my interior much better. In the newer ones, cost-cutting led to less finish and function in the interiors. Mine was a swing keel, but I wished it had been a fixed, since I put the boat in a slip as soon as I could. That swing keel required maintenance and a friend of mine had his drop right out of the boat.

What bay would that be? I am on the Chesapeake and love my fin keel 84 Catalina 22 for the type of sailing we do. But I don't have to trailer mine. The fin keel models are scarce here though, since most people seem to prefer the swing keels. The cockpit on the Catalinas is larger than on the others. For most bay sailing that is a plus.The swing or wing are easier to trailer and can go into shallower water. The swing requires more maintenance.Pete

i sail a cat22 with a wing keel on the barnegat bay in nj. its a great set up as the bay is shallow in most spots, we only draw 2 1/2 ft. mine is an '88 and i like the layout downbelow. i dont like what the 22 capri for '02 looked like at the show, too stark. we sail with 2 adults , and 3 kids age 9,6, and 4. plenty of room although we did like the new 39.........but thats a topic for another day....lol......feel free to email me dneaster@att.net if your interested in the barnegat bay area.
