Recently while winching the keel of my C22 into the upright position the cable snapped allowing the keel to drop. It hit with a thud, bounced up, and the hit again. When I loaded onto the trailer I inspected and did not see any damage however when I checked the tightness of the bolts on the plates holding the keel in place I noticed that one of them when completely tightened did not completely snug the plate in place (1/16" remained between the bolt head and the plate. The other bolt snuged the plate in place as it was designed to do. I do not know if this was like this before the cable snapped. Is there a problem? Any suggestions?

KEEL HANGERS

I replaced my keel hangers , pin and refinished the keel with a new bushing last year. The pin hole hade worn severly and the PO had only replaaced the pin. I found that all my hanger bolts were loose and had been loose long enough for some marine growth to begin between the hangers and seating surface. If the bolts were tight, I wouldn't worry to much because the hangers are cast and really not to even. Assure yourself that they seat against the surface and torque them to around 30 ft/lbs. You also might want to check in the keel trunk where the keel hit when it bounced. 600 lbs. of keel can/could do some damage to the fiberglass. check for leaks. Good luck
