C22 Hull Construction

I purchased a C22 last summer. It was real clean. Then when I was inspecting the area around the battery I noticed that the when I pressed on the inside of the hull area it was "squishy" and oozed a tiny bit of water. I then detected that that the cabin way isle also made a slight squish noise when I walked on it and under the seats at the table I also had soft and squish floors with a little water (light brown colored) that would ooze out. I took the boat to a boat yard and asked what they thought. The owner of the yard said he thought that it was only the foam filler that Catalina placed between the liner and the hull that was saturated with water and had little or no effect on hull integrity. The boat is now out of the water getting a bottom paint job and the hull feels firm from the outside. I'd still like to know how the hull is constructed (I have a 1979 vintatge model). Specifically, is it a sandwich with fiberglass around a wood core? Does anybody know? I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks

squish

hi don, i don't know about the hull but on my 1976 22 at the i had the same squish and to find out why, i cut the first layer of fiberglass from the area and found a 3/32" plywood stiffener just wide and long enough to fit in the battery area. i had to cut some of this away as it was delaminated and below that was a thin layer of some type of potting compound and below that was the inside of the hull.in the area of the hull over the trailer bunks it looks like there is some type of stiffener fiberglassed into the hull. contact CATALINA DIRECT free technical support 916-843-1971 good luck john

Squishy Too

Dan, I have a '77 C22 that I bought last winter. It does the same thing! I have never seen any water, but it makes lots of noise. The boat had been stored outdoors for years before I bought her, so she must have had a bunch of water in the bilge off and on during that time. I have stored her in the barn all winter and I am curious to see if the squish is gone with the snow come spring. Good Luck, Jay
