I bought a depth gauge and I am trying to mount it with no luck. It had a transducer that sits in the hull and I am supposed to epoxy it to a spot in the bilge some place. My problem is that I am not sure where to to mount the transducer in a C22. the guy at the store said that there should be no air between the transducer and the water. I have tried a few areas near the battery but they dont seem to work. Has anyone done this before?

Silicone

I have used silicone successfully, you can move it around easier and a lot less mess than epoxy.

but where do I mount it?

Where on the boat did you mount it? My problem is finding the right spot of the boat that would work. thanks!

Had to dig in the archives for this...

Praba - Here is what I did - works perfectly! Ducer Mounting Submitted by Rob Rich on 01/15 at 11:37AM regarding Catalina 30 Walter - Best thing to do is to take the ducer, connect it to your display and power the system. Dip the ducer in water and then depress it against the hull at the approximate mounting location. Press it hard against the hull, too. Make sure the mounting location is also moist. Move the ducer around until you get a good picture on your depthfinder/fishfinder. In doing this, you will find a good area on the hull that is free of airbubbles in the layup. Once you have a solid location, mark it and then make a dam (quarter-inch bead or larger) of RTV/Silicone ontop of your marking. Allow this to dry. Then mix the epoxy, smear some smoothly across the face of the transducer, and pour the rest slowly into the RTV dam. It should be like filling a mini-swimming pool with epoxy. Be sure not to get any airbubbles in the epoxy (read:pour slowly). Then, just press the ducer into the epoxy, twisting slowly, and hold pressure on it for about 10 minutes. You'd be surprised how easy it is, and how well it works! If you need further or more specific info - feel free to e-mail me. Best of luck - Rob

This sounds strange but really works!

First, to find a good location, you can use a plastic bag filled with water between the transducer and hull when trying out different locations. Here's the strange part. Toilet bowl wax (the beeswax-like ring used to mount toilets) works great for mounting the transducer in a non-permanent manner. I did mine that way "temporarily" over 3 years ago and have never had the need for permanent mounting.

Under Vee Berth

I put mine under the vee berth using silicone. It works fine. Epoxy is supposed to be better, but what if you need to move it or you botch the job and get bubbles in it? With silicone you pry it up, scrape it off, and redo it. With epoxy you go to your suppler and spend $40 bucks for a new transducer. I had previously tried mounting it near the battery box and it worked while not moving but went crazy while underway if going at a good clip. I figure that was due to turbulence from the keel, so I recommend staying ahead of the keel. Good luck whatever way you go. Pete

Toilet bowl wax... still makes me giggle!

I believe you that it works Bob, but it sounds damned funny!
