I have just finished rigging my new (to me) 82 Catalina 22. The halyards are rope and have a stainless steel wire attached to the end that attached to the top of the jib or mailsail. Is this wire actually used and be part of the halyard or should I just clip the end to something on the mast and ignore. I have never seen something like this on any other boat before. Thanks

wire halyards

If the configuration is the same as my '72 the wire runs over the pulleys at the top of the mast. The rope never sees the pulley. Catalina direct sells a conversion kit that is quite simple. It consists of wider pulleys, so that you can accomodate all rope halyards. Without the conversion kit, your all rope halyards would never stay on the existing pulleys.
