c22 average boat speed??

hi everyone the other day i was sailing my c22 30 mi across the lake to pick up some friends for a day of sailing the winds were blowing 20-30 mi so i ended up BLASTING across the lake at over 7 knots average maxed at 9.3!!!! for over 4 hours of the best sailing of my life my boat is not supose to do that?? so how fast have you gone in your boat i average on a day sail about 4-5 knots very light winds 3-3.5 but when the wind picks up the boat shoots up to 6 knots the bottom of my boat is like sand paper and the old sails are blown out!! and my boat moves great i would like to know how you all average on your boats

How fast do you want to go

Most will say you have a hull speed of just over 6 knots.....wrong, that hull speed formula is for a full displacement hull...The C22 is a simi-displacement hull on the edge of plaining.. Its not hard to exceed 6 or 7 knots on in good strong wind... Personally, with the kite up and surfing off a 10 footer on the way down the west coast, I saw 14 knots...A friend of mine once claimed 17 knots off the coast around Santa Cruz

5.89 as per catalina

ok, i am no expert, and maybe you can educate me, but catalina rates the hull speed as 5.89 knots (theoretical)on a brand new c22 mk2. so, allowing for a theoretical +/- and perfect conditions i,ll accept 7 but 14??????were you using gps to get speed and running with a major tide, or do you coat the bottom of your boat with olive oil to reduce the drag. dont get me wrong, i love my c22, and i dont have a knot meter or a gps, i just cant figure how there could be such a discrepancy between the rated and claimed speed. jeff.

Jeff I've had the same remarks from many until they go sailing with me...Its not abnormal to sit on 10 to 12 knots with the kite up, on still water.... It is a new MKll with a Capri Keel and the bottom has been faired and a poly polish applied. The sails are Kevlar and both kites are made of Airx..maybe thats enough to get it to break the surface and plane.....you know the boat is planing when you can hear that freight train comming through the bottom of the boat....

Often over 7

I can't say I have seen 14, but I am often over 7 (measured by GPS) when we have good wind. Eight isn't extremely unusual, but I only see 9 rarely.OTOH: I spend way more time than I like going less than 3 in the light Chesapeake Bay winds we see a lot of the time.Pete
