I just moved up from a C25 to a C270. When I host the main and release the topping lift on the 270, the boom is several inches lower than it was on the 25. I have also noticed that when the main is fully hoisted on the 270, the top of the headboard is 6 to 8 inches below the top of the mast. On the 25 the gooseneck fitting would slide up and down the grove in the mast. A downhaul was used to tension the luff. On the 270 the gooseneck is fixed to the mast with blind fasteners (pop-rivets). You can get plenty of luff tension with the winch. I'm considering moving the gooseneck on the 270 up the mast a few inches so the boom will be higher and less likely to whack somebody up side the head! As it is, I don't think the boom will clear the bimini when on the wind. Has anyone tried moving the boom up? Does anyone know how far from the bottom of the mast (or top of the cabin) the boom should be? I couldn't find this dimension in the 270 Owner's Manual. Bill

I am 5-9 and my boom clears my head by 3 or 4 inches. i'll measure this weekend from the cabin top to the gooseneck

Indirect Measurement

Hi Ted, I found a way to calculate (sort of) the dimension I asked about from the Owner's Manual data. According to the Owner's Manual: Mainsail 'P' = 28'2"; Mast Length = 32'2" If the main is hoisted all the way to the top, there would be about 4'0" from the top of the boom to the bottom of the mast (top of the cabin). With a fixed gooseneck like ours (I assume yours is fixed too), you would need to have to have the tack of the main a little more than the 'P' dimension below the masthead so that you can be sure to get the luff under tension. If it stops raining tomorrow I'm going to make some measurements too. I wonder what is different about my and Ken's boat. I looking forward to seing your measurement. Thanks, Bill

Another possibility

I would not mess around with changing the standard gooseneck arrangement on the 270...I personally think your asking for trouble. There is one item that may be causing the lack of full mainsail hoist. I'll bet that the boltrope in your mainsail has shrunk. How old is your mainsail? My C-30 had the same issue, full mail halyard tension and approx 10" below a full hoist (people on my dock thought Catalina had suplied a C-28 sail). My boom was also just barely clearing my bimini...all the symptoms you are having. I read about the boltrope issue on this forum, had my sailmaker look at it. Sure enough, he had to add approx 6" to the luff boltrope...he called it "easing" the boltrope. Anyway, $75 later, my main had a full hoist and the boom came up as well....no more problem! You can search the archives for more on this topic. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks Stephen

The sail is the origional from 1995. It hasn't seen much use but I'll try to find a sailmaker in the area and see what they say. Thanks again, Bill
