$1,000 to connect the holding tank is outrageous..
But if the seller is dumb enough to believe the broker and will come off the purchase price that much to cover it, don't argue the point...let him! However...the LAST thing you want on ANY boat is any kind of recirculating system. If the system is the same type as Bob described, it will cost you less than $500 to replace it with a marine toilet and decent size holding tank. And yes...you can do it yourself.

Jim: The surveyor is probably just trying to cover-his-ass, BUT figure out what you think it is going to take. 1. Pump for holding tank $50-150 depending on macerator or manual pump. 2. Y-valve $40-50. 3. Waste Hose @ $8-10/ft (15 ft =$150)but you may need a lot more. Head to tank, tank to overboard, tank to deck fitting. 4. Labor @ $65/hr. (10 hrs = $650) Clamps, deck fitting, misc fittings, vented loop, vent and hose. You may be lucky to get off for $1000. My experience with boat yards is these guys don't work too fast and they charge you for all their mistakes one way or another (sort of like a doctor). Get a quote and them guarantee the quote. Do yourself a favor and get a new head while you are at it. Be sure that existing holding tank is in good condition. (new head $200, new tank $150). WOW I think this is going to be closer to 1.5 boat units.

He's on Lake Ontario, which is "no discharge"...he can't use 'em. New toilet: $200 Tank: $150 max Hose: $150 is about right Total, if he installs it himself: about $500. Labor: another $500. But that's ONLY if he has to replace everything. We don't know what's needed--what's on the boat now, what should be replaced, or even how old it is...but I seriously doubt that it's still the original system. All we do know is that the surveyor said the holding tank isn't connected to the head, and that the broker estimated $1,000 to connect 'em. $1,000 for parts and labor to install a complete new system is reaonable. But it's a ridiculous price to do nothing more than connect an existing toilet to an existing holding tank.

I believe that he IS in the Long Island Sound area. The fact that he is buying a boat that does NOT have a legal head would in fact make the value of the boat less the value that a boat yard would charge to install a proper system. Not the price to do it him self. If Jim is up to the task, he should deduct the quoted amount from the purchase price and pocket the difference IF in fact he does this himself.

they make TOP quality, thick-walled roto-molded tanks, and have more than 400 shapes and sizes--over 100 of which are non-rectangular--to choose from..and for a VERY reasonable price. And you can spec your own fittings sizes and locations, to be installed by them when the tank is made.
