C&C 39 Everett
I am a new C&C39 owner. My current engine is tired and I would like to replace it. Various calculators such as vicprop suggest I need 40hp to reach hull speed. I have two questions. 1) do I really need 40hp, and 2) can anyone recommend a good engine for a C&C39?

40 hp for a 39 foot boat sounds reasonable, but whether that’s necessary or something smaller might be adequate could depend on how you want to use the boat. For example needing to push against wind and waves will be more demanding than just quick in and out of marinas.

What is the current engine? Some engine brands are more easily replaced with others, for example Universal with Beta, based on dimensions like engine mount locations.

What makes you think the current engine is tired? Marine diesels often run for thousands of hours so it might just be better to fix the problem than go through the large expense of a new engine.

What's in there now? 40 hp seems about right, my 36' Sabre has a 33 (or 35 depending on how it is rated) and has plenty of power.

How many hours on the engine now?

As for replacements, Nanni and Beta are based on the same Kubota block. Nanni is a nice blue and Beta is red. Nannis seem to be more available than Betas.

The 40 hp Yanmar is a common rail engine, there are a few advantages in terms of fuel efficiency. However they are electronic, whereas the Nanni and Betas are mechanical and less sensitive to fuel issues.

Your engine placement looks to be "In-Line".
A BETA would work as a replacement for the Atomic 4 Gas engine often used in the C&C 39.

You do have 17,000 displacement. While a 40HP can work, you might find it a bit underpowered when it comes to a swift tidal current in the Pacific NW. I say that because you have identified Everett as your home port.

BETA is a good engine. The BETA 25 is listed as an Atomic 4 replacement.

When I was looking at them, I thought the BETA 50 (45Hp) would make a good match for my 35ft 16,000 displacement boat.

Good luck with your search. Be sure that the engine will fit your space and engine stringers. If you have to modify the engine space, it will set you back almost the cost of the engine in labor and materials.

Our First 38 is similar in length and weight and runs easily to hull speed with our Perkins 4-108 (45hp) and we normally cruise at about 70% power. You will likely find that having your current engine rebuilt is cost effective. I’ve been quoted $7000 to have my 4-108 rebuilt and $23000 to replace it with a Beta ( Canadian dollars) . If you do the work yourself a rebuild will be about 10% of a shop quote. I had a quote of $5000 to rebuild a Universal 5411 and did it myself for about $500 including buying tools I didn’t have.
