Interesting information about the Charger/Inverter on our 2001 C 320. We have Hull #851. The boat was purchased, fully equipped from a dealer in late summer, 2001. The only real "power guzzler " on the boat is the refrigeration unit. We have Hull # 851 which was picked up from the dealer in August, 2001. As of 5/03 we have fewer than 300 hours on the engine. Catalina installed a ProMariner Flyback 20-3 (20 Amp) charger/inverter. The charger failed during a recent cruise, 21 months after the boat was delivered. We contacted ProMariner. After following their instructions we determined that the unit was "fried". Pro Mariner told us that the 20-3 was not appropriate for a boat with refrigeration and recommended we replace the unit with a 30-3 (30 Amp) charger. When we called Catalina we were told that they no longer use ProMariner chargers because they had many problems, and recommended a Charles brand 2 bank 30amp unit. They not only have changed suppliers, it appears they have also realized the originally installed 20 Amp units were not appropriate in boats with refrigeration. We are replacing the charger with the ProMariner 30-3 because we can use the existing wiring exactly as it is. We will get some kind of rebate from ProMariner and we are also pursuing some kind of warranty coverage from Catalina.
