I just bought a C-30 1990 about 2 weeks ago. Is it just me or is the main sail a bear to sheet in? Also the traveler is impossible to move unless I head up

Cheeck the diameter of your main sheet. I had the same problem, release the sheet

mainsheet

Hi, I recently purchased a 1990 30 myself, and I can't agree with you more! It is very difficult to trim, both in terms of strength to trim as well as very awkward. I can never seem to keep the mainsheet in the cabintop cleat provided and really do not like keeping it on the winch, especially upwind. Has anyone relocated the sheet to the end of the boom so the instead of coming thru the cockpit the helmsman has access right by the wheel??

Get the upgrade

Two years ago I put the traveler upgrade from Garhour (sp?) on my 1988 C30. It makes all the difference. We can fine tune the righ no matter how tight the mainsheet is. It was reasonably (read cheap!) priced, and has made managing the main a piece of cake. As for the mainsheet, I have always left it on the winch and it has never been a problem

Main Sheet

On my 1977 the traveler is just foward of the wheel just aft of the opening cockpit seats. This makes adjusting quick and easy. The attachment position is about 1 foot from the end of the boom. We attached the mainsheet to the boom just like you would attach a boom vang. Works great!

Joe, and David; Are you using a winch to trim the main, or are you trying to sheet in by hand (while going to windward)? Is the winch self tailing? What other task would this winch be doing while you are sailing? I always leave the main sheet on the winch while sailing (mine goes through a stopper), and just engage the stopper if I need the winch for another task, such as adjusting the luff tension, or reefing. To Gary

I'm I being overly concerned about the sheet being on the winch, it's S/T, but what happens if you want to dump the main very quickly?? Thats really my concern, and also the fact that the sheet comes thru the cockpit right across the starboard seat. Maybe I'm wrong but there seems like there should be an easier way. Thanks David

C-30 mainsheet

Joe; In reading your post it seemed like you said the sheet comes thru the cockpit over the starboard seat? Are you using the jib winch, or the cabintop winch? Make sure your lines are not too big for the blocks, both sheet and traveler. Make sure all the blocks are clean and well-lubricated and that the winch gears and pawls are clean and well-lubed, too. The boat is ten years old and maybe the previous owners didn't keep up with maintenance.
