I am looking to replace the Depth Gauge in our 1985 C27. After reading some posts from the archives, I think I like the idea of mounting the transducer inside the hull. At least one can remove it to do some testing when there is a problem. I would like to know which brands you have had success with. It looks like a lot of folks are happy with the NAVMAN instruments, but I am sure others work just as well. My current installation is a Datamarine Corinthian. It uses a 200 KHZ transducer, I believe the electronics are bad, not the transducer. Since there are no leaks around the current installatin, I will just leave the old transducer in place. So where did you mount your transducer? How did you mount it and are you happy with the results? Barnegat bay depth is shallow so I do not need to know if I am in 200ft of H2O. Thanks, Bill

Consider replacing the transducer

I've heard of one person that had lots of problems with an internal mounted transducer, not sure what brand it was, but many transducers 'brands' are made by the same company. I replaced my Datamarine instruments on my 88 Catalina 30 (#5279 - name: Barca Vela) in 1995 with Raytheon Sea-Talk ST50's (now Raymarine) and their transducer was the same diameter so it was an easy replacement. Also, just because your transducers are not leaking now, remember the caulking has a limited life, so it might in the future, so replacing the transducer with new caulking might be better in the long run (I used Boatlife's LifeSeal). Hope this helps.

Bill where is your transducer located

My transducer is located port side about 3 feet behind the keel. I thought I would try an in hull to make it easier to troubleshoot but I am not getting any resopnses from Catalina owners as to there sxperiences. Did you have the yard do your swap out or did you do it yourself (transcucer). I am considering the Navman 3100. Bill
