Well.....the results are in, and a couple C-22's took top honor's at the PHX "Birthday Regatta/Leukemia Cup" on Saturday. The lake was full with 77 total entries, including the local C-22 One Design Fleet. Not up to the caliber of the C-22 One Design racers in the regatta, we entered the one day "Cruising Class" race. It was a little more relaxed long distance race to the north of Lake Pleasant, around two islands, down the lake to another island near the dam, leaving it to port and heading back up the lake to the finish line. Well, after the results were tabulated, two C-22's finished on top with Dennis Lynde in "Knot Again" smoking the fleet,(and us!) to take 1st place. Debbie and I in "Y-Knot?" placed 3rd overall out of the 16 entries. Dennis was smoking hot right from the start and I don't think anyone ever got in front of him. Great job Dennis!

This was our first time sailing on Lake Pleasant. The water is unbelievably clear! We had a GREAT weekend, and plan on returning again next year for some GREAT mid-winter sailing on the sweet waters of Lake Pleasant, AZ.

Sorry I missed you. I was out there Saturday floating around watching the action, it was like a swarm of bees watching 70 plus boats battling for position

The skipper of the 2nd place boat owns the Sailboat Shop at the lake, so you were in some good company.

I'm glad the weather was so perfect for all of you. I'm headed out there today for some high 70 degree temps...it only gets better this week with temps approaching 80 by the end of the week.

Yeah, I was looking forward to checking out the work you've been doing on your C-22. Got all the salt washed off my boat and trailer! :D

just out of curiosity do ya know the time/length of regatta?

Kind of curious what the average knot speed was. and what the wind speed was.

Sorry I don't know the total time for the course, but it was fairly long. The wind was real nice until the start....just as we were starting, the wind died as we all drifted across the starting line. Slowly the wind came back, but it was from the south west. We're a cruising boat, but I've picked up some pointers from the racers who figured out a long time ago our boats sail faster with the stern out of the water. I set the sails and the autopilot for our course straight down the lake. I sat up on the forward deck,(which lifted the stern out of the water with my big-butt planted up forward), and with my new wireless remote, steered the boat following the wind that I could see on the water. I also maintained a course so I would block the wind for the other boats as we move up in the fleet. I managed to keep our sails in clean,(but light) air. Once we rounded the two islands on the north end of the lake, the wind built to a comfortable 8-10 I would guess, and we had a nice beat all the way south to the next island, which we rounded and headed for the finish line. BUT! The other races were still going on, and so we ended up finishing opposite of the other classes starting and finishing. It was a fun race, and at the start, we were the first to drift across the line, but the others who stayed more to the center of the lake had a bit of wind. At one point, I was looking at the stern of a MAC-26, and I knew that was bad news, and started getting serious. Also, would like to point out, we flew our jib, where the others flew genoa's. The last photo shows my big-butt up forward where I could steer the boat VIA the marvels of technology. I thought about hanking on our drifter since it was a PHRF fleet, but decided anyone can sail fast hanging on more sail! It takes a sailor to get the most out of a jib! LOL!!!

One thing they did at the Skipper's meeting was hand out flowers to all the racers. It seems the club lost 4 of their members last year, so as a tribute, everyone was to throw their flower's in the lake during the regatta. Man, I gotta tell you, I never met any of these folks, but it choked me up during the Skipper's Meeting. Pretty neat tribute!!!!

Can't wait to return for this annual event next year! WE HAD A GREAT TIME!!!! Thanks AZ Yacht Club!

Lake Pleasant is funny, we have great wind from 8-12 every morning and almost always from the north. At noontime the wind stops and I mean stops dead until about 2 PM when it starts up from the south and continues into the early evening.
