Thinking about the standard winches and the trouble we had in heavy winds: does anyone have suggestions or recommendations for changing out the #6's for larger ones, or self-tailing or both--any real gain in doing this? I suppose changing out the jibsheets may help--can't get enough purchase on the sheet when trying to blade out in heavy wind. The std winches look undersized. Your thoughts?

Try Winchers

We installed "winchers" on both our C22 and C25 years ago. They greatly improved the performance of the winches by making them self tailing. This makes adjustments in heavy winds much easier, since you don't have to first unload the cleat. Self tailing winches are great, but very expensive. Winchers still cost a very small amount. Having sailed on San Francisco Bay with both boats, the boat's winches are appropriate, and the winchers help enormously. Availble from WMP, Boat US, Defender, et. al. If you get them, read the instructions: the line doesn't go through the little lip at the top, but rather winds up the winch drum to the underside of the winchers to work properly. Disregard the issue about using them only for halyards, they work perfectly on jib sheets.

Chek jib sheet size

I do not have any problem with my # 6 winches and 3/8 in Jib Sheets with just 2 wraps. I have actually broken the winch off trying to tighten my halyard with 1/4 line and three wraps.
