I am a single-handed sailor, and it is very difficult to change to a smaller headsail if the wind comes up. The solution, unless anyone can tell me why not, is to go with a furling headsail. I need to replace both jibs due to their age, and therefore the furling rig makes sense at this time. Harken makes one that is several hundred bucks more than the lesser priced one in the Catalina Direct book. Is the brand worth the extra bucks? Also, in order to maintain decent sail shape when partially furled, the 130% genoa is recommended. Will I notice a significant speed reduction over my old 150% that I use on calmer days? Those of you who have made the modification to the furler system, please advise!! Thanks, David

Furling Gear

I have used CDI furlers on all 3 of my C22s and have had great success. The kit from Catalina Direct has everything you need. The sail warehouse offers a great package deal. Make sure you get a replcement headstay with a toggle to reduce the stress on the headstay fitting at the masthead.

I had a CDI on my 22 also

I don't want this to sound like a comercial, but the CDI was all I ever needed. It's as cheap as they come and guarenteed for life. I had a 150 on mine....and yes, the purist will tell you that you lose sail shape (and you do lose some) and therefore some performance when you are partially furled. But, it beats the hell out of going fore deck by yourself. I wouldn't leave home without a furling headsail. Brad

Make sure you have a foam luff!!

I have CDI as well. I had to replace my Jib and purchased one from Ulman. It has a foam luff designed specifically for use with roller furlers. What an improvement. With out the foam luff tape(north used lines sawn in to the sailsluff) it is impossible to keep sail shape. Th sail bags out in the worse condition keeping you from going windward with any efficiency. Since you are buying new sails do yourself a favor and include a foam luff...you'll love it!
