I just removed the drum from my Catalina 22 Keel winch in order to change the wire. When I re installed the drum on to the winch, the internal clutch is not working so it will not stay in the up position. Any ideas what I did wrong. Thank you in advance. John Windfall Victoria BC

Fiber Washer
When you took the handle off, was there a fiber washer? The stock winch consists of a drum on a coursely threaded shaft, with the handle attached to the same shaft with finer threads. When you turn the handle counter clockwise, the handle loosens, allowing the keel to freefall, until the drum catches up to the handle, squeezes the fiber washer, and stops the keel from falling any farther. Maybe you lost a part.

I once had my winch fail, I ask others and was told it couldn't fail! Although it did ! I took it out and worked with it for several hours trying to get it to fail without sucess, finally I found out how to make it fail, one grain of sand between the clutches and its in freewheeling mode. It would crank up, but had I released the handle I would most likely suffered a brokem arm. Not saying this is whats wrong with yours but its worth a chack. The handle also must tighten againt the winch body to ingage the clutches as you crank it up.
