I don't actually own a C 22 but I had to fill in the blanks. I'm retired and want to take my grandchildren (aged 5 and 6) plus my wife sailing. I'd thought a Cal 20 was what I needed but then came across a beautiful Columbia 22. I asked my racing friends about this boat and they had bad things to say about performance and responsiveness in anything other than a stiff wind. They thought I'd need the outboard a lot. Does anyone out there have any advice on this topic please. Thank you. Tony tonyheeley@hotmail.com

Thanks for your reply. Other people have also responded and I now have a more positive outlook towards this design. On Friday the owner and I plan to go for a sail and, if nothing unfortunate happens, I may be the proud owner of a very attractive boat for the first time in many years. Tony

Tony, I own a c 29 and love it. I can't tell you much about the c22, but I can tell you that the cal 20 is one of the wetest boats I've sailed. I raced one on the Berkeley Circle in SF bay and felt like I was in a washing machine...no spin cycle. Larry

i have a columbia 22 that i sail in rhode island. it is one of the fastest boats for its size and really loves a 4-6 knot wind. 12 knots by myself gets difficult as i have a fin keel.don't let your friends tell you that you will need the motor. my fuel bill each summer is 15-20 dollars. use motor to get off mooring or to bring into a dock. go for it

Sluggish in light air....

I have a 1969 Columbia 22. She is my heavy air boat! Loves a stiff breeze. Very solid and comfotable where other boats would make you nervous. However, she is slow and sluggish in a light breeze (2 to 6 knots). For what its worth I own the shoal draft, heavy ballast version.

Heavy version?

Hi Robert, you talk about the heavy ballast version, are you talking about the fine keel version? I own a C-22 and I know that she has 1000lbs approx. in ballast. Is that the heavy version? Thanks for the infos! Sébastien, nwe C-22 owner http://groups.msn.com/Voilecampingstreettrucking/gronimo1.msnw

I think it's a perfect boat for sailing with the grand kids. It is a forgiving boat and holds her own very well in a blow. The deep cockpit is a safe place for the kiddies or they can go below. Admittedly, she will not be a rocket in light winds for the same reason, a relatively heavy displacement for this "big" 22-footer. But she will definetly sail fast enougth and you guys will have a great time. I have a 10 year old daughter and have no concerns when the wind picks up, lighter boats will heel past the point of comfort for kiddies and some guests. Safety makes for more enjoyable fun.
