I went down to the boat today and re-ran wires so that the ground of the Garmin also connects with the NEMA - on the control head of my Raymarine S1 autopilot.
I was just in the slip so I am not sure that this is a total test, but I set a course with the GPS and then turned the autopilot on and hit track. The course computer for the autopilot came up with the right heading, turned the wheel, and then beeped for of course. I wasn't moving so this is a good indication that I have it working!
The total test will be this spring when I go out for the first time. The results for now are very positive.
Anyone interested.....the Blue wire from the Garmin GPS 441S goes to the NEMA + slot in the back of the control head of the S1 Raymarine Autopilot. The Black ground goes over to the NEMA - on the back of the control head. Mine is branched off of the ground since I wanted to make sure that the ground wasn't running directly through the control head. I guess call it in parallel and not in a series if that makes sense!
