BVI's Fresh Water

Bob, when we were there a couple of months ago, 2adults and 2 13 yo boys, we filled up with water on Spanish Town and it cost us all of $4. Now we only had one girl, who knows sailing and therefore not to waste water, but we didn't skimp. I know we put in a whole lot more than 4 gallons.

If I still have the receipt, I'll let you know what it was per gallon. Have fun!!

Re-reading your post, maybe your friend was talking about bottled fresh water?

Just there 6 weeks ago...

If you take a mooring at the Leverick Bay resort - the water is free! And they'll throw in a free bag of ice, too. (while you're there, take in the Happy Arghhhhhh show - kitschy pirate show...but lots of fun.)

We put the full 80 gallons in our tank when we returned - it cost us something like $25-30. Not cheap, but still reasonable.

There were a couple of places with water that high. Peter Island comes to mind. Most of the charter boats have pretty big tanks now and you might not need to refill depending on how you use what you have. Saba rock I think also had free water, I know they had free ice. We also got a slip at Spanish Town for the day because it was red flagged at the Baths and we had to take a cab over. The slip was $40 for the night and had free water. Decent provisioning store right there too.

Have you checked the cruising guides, your charter base website and the BVI website? Perhaps these sources didn't have current info...

Many places down island do charge a dollar a gallon; a dollar EC! That's about .37, still expensive, but not the same as US$1.00. Perhaps that's what you heard?

Hi. I keep a boat in BVI. Typically water to fill your tank runs about 15 cents a gallon. Jugs of water from the machines are $1/gallon. As mentioned, some marinas provide it free if you rent a slip. BVI water is purified by reverse osmosis, so it's good stuff.

PS - the US and British Virgins both use the US dollar as currency.

Leverick Bay "free" water update

Checked with my sailing buddy who was also on our trip. He reminded me the water was free at Leverick Bay because we bought fuel. Still a nice perk - you gotta buy fuel either way at some point.

Peter Island update....

Doesn't surprise me the water was expensive at Peter Island.
We took a $30 mooring ball in Great Harbor and walked over to the Peter Island Resort. The mooring balls are $60 there in their small harbor. The night we were there they had a dinner buffet - @ $87.50 per person. And the posted cheapest room was $860 per night.

The Amway corporation owns the entire Peter Island. They've invested lots in the resort. It's clearly first class.

All that said, their $15 hamburger in their beach side restaurant is outstanding for lunch. And they welcomed us in the restaurant even though we weren't staying at the resort. They even allowed us to sit on the beach and drink their beer (beer was reasonably priced). The beach is one of the prettiest in the BVIs. And there were lots of beautiful (and rich) people on the beach. It's not a far walk from Great Harbor. Worth the trip.
