We asked for a comparison between BVI and the Bahamas and got some good input. Thanks for that one and now we know where were going with that info. Now were asking about the comparison between Belise and the BVI. Does anyone have any input on Belize?

I have chartered in both places. Belize probably 6 or 7 years ago, the BVI 2. BVI anchorages are designed for charterers. Pretty much each one has a bar/restaurant or 2 or 3. Mooring balls are common and most anchorages have quite a few boats in them. Belize has almost none of this. Once you leave Ambergis and Cay Caulker you will have no opportunity to resupply for several days. Plan to cook your own meals most of the time and don 't count on any mooring balls. It will not be uncommon to be the only boat in an anchorage. I found snorkling better in BVI, but locals friendlier in Belize.

We only got about half way down from Abergis, so I don't know about the rest of the trip to Placidea. Next time, we will do a one way trip all the way to Placida.

Monamie,
Have you considered just going south? There are Sunsail and Moorings charter bases all through the Caribbean. Very similar to the BVI experience. You'll just learn to clear customs and immigration between nations (islands).

I highly recommend the area between St. Lucia and Union Island, the "Windward" Islands.

The Antigua area is very lush (hence wet). With the huge mega yachts in the major harbors, and secluded anchorages elsewhere, it is very different from the BVI. I really enjoyed Nelson's Boat Yard, from the historical point of view.

Just got back from Grenada and the Grenadines and you won't find any better sailing anywhere short of the south Pacific. Bequia (Mac's lobster pizza), Mustique (Basil's Beach Bar), Canouan, Union Isld. (The Happy Isld. Bar), Petit St. Vincent, Carriacou, and all around Grenada are un-matched for sailing and fun. I would not do it in anything under 40' though...big winds (18-27) and big seas are very common...but HUGE FUN.

As you can see from the lack of comments on Belize, it is not a major destination for charters, which is one of the great things about it as far as I am concerned.
