removehtml]Ok all of you "in the know". I've been to BVI's,and had my share of painkillers. Going to St Vincent & Grenadines with Sunsail in April with 3 other couples. We are having our traditional planning party and I need to know what drinks to serve! Is there a specialty rum drink they pour down there? I am sure this group will have the answer and the recipe!! Thank you. Bob.Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

A Good Rum Drink

that's a winner is "muddy water" made from a dark rum & orange juice. Variations I've enjoyed are done with the 50/50 mix of orange juice and pineapple juice. To drop a hint of sweetness (which really isn't necessary) is to drop a few dashes of grennadine to the mix. I prefer to use Captain Morgan Tattoo, it works great with Meyers or other dark rums also. Also good is vanilla rum with cream soda, another sweet drink. Enjoy

I invented a rum punch that people seem to like

They drink a LOT of it when I make it anyway: 50% orange juice, 25% pineapple juice, 25% apricot nectar. Add the rum of your choice--light or dark--in the ratio of your choice. You can make this up in quantity ahead of time. Serve over ice...top off each glass with Schweppes or Canada Dry ginger ale. Stick "fruit salad" (slice of orange, a maraschino cherry and a piece of pinapple or any other fruit you want to use on a toothpick) in it and enjoy.

Black Seal Bermudan rum

Use this refined spiced rum that is a descendant of the Royal Navy's 'grog' that was served to the matelots. It may cost a bit more than Bacardi or Cap'n Morgan but it is well worth it. It has cloves and cinnamon blended into it. My favorite drink made with this is a "Dark and Stormy" Black seal rum, ginger ale (some like a dash of soda or seltzer water to smooth out the sweetness), a slice of lime and you have a real drink. I am sure that white rums have their place in this world but after exploring the world of rum I will not have any 'white' (clear) rum on my boat. Making a good drink is a lot like cooking: make sure you are using the best and freshest ingredients you can find and it will turn out well. Books have been written on the various kinds of rum that are produced on the many islands upon which it is made. Mount Gay rum is pretty good and I have found 4 varieties sold here in the US but there are so many others. Even Bacardi makes a decent brown rum. Have a great cruise and planning party.

Nothing but the best, Mount Gay.

My sailing buddy and I drink to what we refer as "grog" which is nothing else than rum (Mount Gay from Barbados) dilluted with water with a little ice. The good thing about this grog is that we can start drinking after 9:00 AM (before is uncivilized and only for alcoholics) and be drinking all day long while just nursing a slight buzz. After we hit the dock (figure of speech) or the anchorage then we can adjust the mixture to a real drink. Never went for those drinks with little umbrellas nor those kamikazee mixtures which would impair my sailing abilities. Puerto Rican rums, Bacardi or Don Q are also excellent. Long ago I found water does not give as much of a hangover as cola and if you get one a cold beer in the morning will help. (This is a justified exeption to the 9:00 AM rule) Have a good one.

No cocktail advice, but here's a local beer

Hairoun is brewed in St Vincent. It's OK, but I like Carib better. Didn't find anything like a local favorite cocktail. We spent a week down there last summer, so send me an email if you have other questions. I'm in the directory.

If you like your Rum "Neat" I've got the Rum for you

I am a big fan of Mount Gay and was drinking Goslings Black Seal Dark n' Stormies in Bermuda over 25 years ago. But there is only one that I would say is great "neat" Its "Pyrat Rum" XO. Its phenominal straight up. You can't find it everywhere, but if you look hard enough you'll find it. I was in St Martin a few years back and discovered it. Its made in Anguila and I have turned other people onto it. I have served it to people without them knowing what it is and they have said it was either a fine cognac or an excelent single malt. They have all been blown away by how good it is. Rememebr its my find but I'll let you in on it ;) I like to take credit for it and in some ways don't want to let too many people know about it and keep it to myself

screamin flammini

Myers rum, orange juice and a dash of bitters. Not the prettiest thing to look at (nor was Mrs. Flammini) but it will make you smile and feel right at home.

Dark Rum

Mt Gay Extra Old. And yes Hairoun's ginger beer was really good. Their beer was good too. I liked it better than Carib, although I don't see all the fuss with Carib anyway.

My favorite subject...Grog

As a rum drinker for 40+ years I have a long list of favorites: When I started drinking rum I started with the light rums mixed with different beverages and fruit juices. As the years went by I enjoyed the taste of rum more and more and tried all the flavored rums, and ended up favoring the more flavorful dark rums. Witch are great with just ice and a pinch of lime. Some of my favorites are: Goslings-Black Seal, Screech-A Newfoundland rum, Brugal, Appleton Estate-V/X, Cruzan-Dark, Flora deCana-7or12 year old, and Mateusalum-dark.

Roll on the Rocks

Bajan (Barbados) host introduced us to a Roll on the Rocks and a Lime Squash. Lime Squash is just frozen fresh squeezed limes sorta like a lime slushy. A Roll on the Rocks is Mount Gay Extra Old Rum on the Rocks. Lime Squash makes a nice chaser for the roll!
