We will be chartering in BVI in December. I was thinking of taking along a set of FRS/GMRS walkie talkies for general communication when we go ashore. Does anyone know if it is legal to use these in BVI? Also - I was thinking of taking my own handheld marine VHF as a backup. What is the legality of using it there - do they have a licensing requirement? Any other tips that you would like to share about BVI bareboat chartering - feel free to do so. Thanks in advance. Roy

Very useful
We've found them (FRS radios) useful on previous charters. Didn't ask about the legality, but no one seemed to mind them at all. They are helpful when part of the crew is out in the dink, or ashore, and you need to contact them. We're returning for our eighth charter next June. E-mail if you have other BVI sailing questions. using handheld VHF in BVI
I charted a sailboat in BVI's in 2004 and again in 2006, both times I took my handheld VHF radio with me. I took out the batteries and put them in my checked luggage and carried the VHF in my backpack aboard the plane with me, no problem. I was very glad to have taken my VHF, as we had electrical problems aboard and ended up with out any power to the house batteries, thereby needing the handheld to communicate with the marina's and charter company. I Used my H/H last time
We hads 4 boats from my club down there. It was good to have my H/H (recommended that others bring theirs). Comms were nice to have and uninterrupted. Not many people used their VHF's down there (probably due to proximity to helm).
