Believe it or not I actually want to get a wireless connection while chartering in the BVI. Anyone have any idea how to best accomplish this? I have Cingular for cell. After speaking to them it dosn't sound like they are too well connected down there.

Try Google

Did a quick Google on "cell phone British Vigin Islands" and found a few things.

BVI cell coverage

We chartered in the BVI last year and brought our cell phones with us. Unfortunately, service is virtually non-existent down there. In fact, it's not all that great in Puerto Rico, either. Enjoy your charter and look at the positive side - un-interrupted sailing!

Boat Phone

We just got back from BVI Conch included a cell phone (Boat Phone)and we had coverage the whole time. My Cingular worked when we were close to USVI. The cost boat phone $4.00 per min out going $2.00 per min incoming. Cingular $2 or 2.50 per min I can't remember. Have fun

T mobile

I used my t-mobile service down there and had better signals than I get at home. Also worked well in san juan at no extra charge. The catch was $3.00/ min. in the BVI

Purchase a local prepaid phone.

Some carriers are beter than others. If your home network does not work. I would suggest you purchase a local prepaid phone. Decide where you be cruising the most, whether USVI or BVI and get a local phone there. We had to do that in Washington, NC as our Nextel could not get a signal there. We have not had a problem in San Juan nor in the US Virgin Islands but have had no experience in the BVI. One of the great things about cruising is that you have to adapt to the local customs and conditions in order to meet your needs.

Sprint

We chartered out of Tortola this past summer. I have Sprint and we had service when close to the USVIs as well. Service in Puerto Rico was good as well. Out towards the Bitter End we were out of luck. On the plus side we had free wireless internet access while at the Bitter End! It was mildly amusing to download mail while having a pina colada at Saba Rock! Enjoy! matt
