The cable of our swingkeel buzzes quite loud while sailing. Could it be that the vibration sound comes from the not totally withdrawn position of the swingkeel or is the sound just normal?
This hum is quite normal and nothing to be concerned about. It can sometimes be lessened by either slackening the cable or putting a little tension on it.This topic comes up every now and again at the Sailor's Forum on the C25/250 National Association. Next time it's buzzing, have a crewman hold the handle and see if the buzzing stops. Mine (C22) made an awful racket until I discovered the little plastic sleeve on the handle was the culprit. I removed it, and the buzz was gone. There still is the hum, but that's fairly normal.
I am a relatively new owner of a Catalina 22, and have heard that hum since the beginning. In fact, it has come to signify "speed" to me....the faster I go, the louder it gets. So it is my built-in knotmeter! Now I have come to love my hum. (By the way, I think it is quite normal.)
