but my broker (and his also) explained that with a good survey that everything would be alright.
Well, alright enough for the brokers to get their commissions.

Edit: who digs up these old threads?

YOU HAVE TO HAVE SEA TRIAL!!!
Amen. Congrats on the boat, but, wow so many things that were haywire. Not so here. In 2002 had our surveyor do an in water (all systems) and out water survey (hull) plus sea trial on a 1991 P42. Mostly minor stuff. PO paid for three frozen through hull replacements. All systems worked. Had to push the surveyor in finding where everything was so that we could check it off. Complicated boat.

We've sailed her thousands of miles all over PNW waters since then and all the original systems still work. Some repairs over the years (recharge heat pumps, refrigeration) replaced water pump, refrigerator compressor/condenser, etc. Wonderful boat.

Winter (March) 2016 has passed; two springs and summers have come and gone. The guy either did it or did not buy the boat by now. His weather issues are over with by a factor of two. Who are you guys now talking to since post #37?

my broker (and his also) explained that with a good survey that everything would be alright. Well this summer I have spent over 12K replacing water lines, AC units, pumps, impellers etc. On the survey it specifically states she couldn't test everything since it was not in the water.
It sounds like the surveyor is saying that a good survey needs the boat to be in the water so, the broker's advice might have still been good. Just because the boat has been surveyed doesn't mean it was a complete or even a good survey. The buyer had to decide what chances he is willing to take.
When I talked to the guy who sold me my boat on the phone, he was two states away, he assured me the boat was in great condition and I could sail her that day (she was on a trailer on the side of the road). Then, he asked me if I was willing to take a chance. I said i might be but mht wife most certainly wasn't.
I committed to the sale over the phone knowing that I was not going to bring home a $1000 boat that was launch ready. I was not disappointed. I just wanted the boat.

Give a good deposit and add in contract that if everything is not good at future sea trail both walk away happy, or less money for what ever needs repair.
don't think many boats sell during winter time.
