i am buying my first vega saturday to keep for the rest of my sailing
years. i am 50 and have looked for a boat to travel on alone or with 1
other. i want to leave the states this oct head to bermuda then to
caribbean. the caribbean 1500 said this boat was to small for them? so
i'll go it alone on my first big trip ever with some offshore and
costal cruising experience. what do you say? is this the boat for the
job!!

Don't be worrying about that. A Dutch sailor travelled with the vega
Little My III From the Azores back to the Netherlands Solo (Reis door
het blauw, Henk Jukkema)Probably isn't translated in English,
the other one is Beserk from David Mercy. (Google for the wild vikings
and vega)
They travelled to Antartica with the vega. So she is sturdy enough to
go on long trips with.
She behaves perfect and is a smooth sailyacht. O, the things about
moving on the prop badly is true for the first year, the boat decides
witch way to go, you don't have anything to say agains a little wind
and low speed. But after a while and a bit of practice she's wil
behave onder prop the same way as under sail. (where of course she
shines....)
Have Fun!

I doubt that you would hear any major negative comments from this
list. The boat is, if in good material condition, probably ready for
coastal cruising but for offshore/trans-oceanic cruising I would
engage a reputable surveyor to help you make good decisions on any
needed upgrades to hull and rig.

Good luck and fair winds! I think you've made a good choice.
