Buying H-27

The owner has accepted my offer and I am going through the steps to buy an H-27. It is my ideal boat after an H-23.5 and a Catalina 250(DOG!). I intend to have the boat pulled out of the water and will have a marine survey done. I will do a sea (lake?) trial with the broker salesperson when we take the boat from its marina to the other marina where the boat will be pulled out. The bottom will be spray washed and the surveyor will work his magic. All is well with the world. However, I am a fairly new sailor. What should I look for on this particular boat (1992). It seems to be well cared for, but I would appreciate any advice from those of you who have owned or are familiar with this particular boat. I plan to search the archives to see what I can pick up, there. Other ideas or suggestions will be most welcome. Thanks, John

Great boat---

I've owned a 27 90 for four years and am very satisfied with the performance and room. May move up someday, but for now it is a great boat-----sail the Maine coast-------

Nice Boat, do you have

an inboard engine? Check for leaks under the engine. If the owner cleaned up, you may need a sea trial. You my be able to get the price down at settlement it the winches or other hardward need to be serviced. Double check all the electronics. Battery charger too. How do the sails look? Check the luff tape on the jib if it has rollar furling. There may be rips in the tape...that 300 bucks to repair. Make sure you check for blister and voids. Voids can be on deck too! GREAT BOAT!!! One of the best 27 out there! Good Luck, Jim H-28

Finding H-27

I have been looking for an H-27 with diesel myself. How and where did you find this one, and what was the price? I've been concerned about blistering too; if your survey finds blisters, how will that affect the purchase? Also, anyone else out there with an H-27 with diesel for sale, let me know. Thanks.

Response to Greg

As it turned out, I backed out on the deal even though I believe the boat is probably ok. I started out into the lake with the broker salesperson and the motor quit about 200 yards out! We sailed back into the slip with the jib. We worked on the motor for a day and a half but could not get it restarted. Both the sales rep and the marine surveyor I retained said it was a fuel line problem, but no mechanic was available on short notice to fix it. The motor was running fine when I started out and the surveyor had run an oil test to show that it was in good shape internally. The owners are the original owners and the boat looks great otherwise. My wife ( and me to a lesser extent) have a real aversion to getting stuck on the lake, so I backed out. You should call Tommy Turner at WeatherMark in Buford, Ga, if you want to talk about this boat. I have known Tom for years. He will not try to stick you with a bad boat. The same day, the owner of the dealerships own boat was for sale, and this same surveyor flunked its survey. Call Tom at 770-945-0788. The dealership also has a 93 h-27 they took as a trade. John

Why back out?

Sounds like water in the fuel to me: -- running fine for maybe 15 minutes? -- situation seems fine one day and bad the next? -- motor seems to be getting no fuel or mechanic thinks it needs to be re-primed? Besides, changing a fuel line, filter, and water separator is not the end of the world. Definitely not rocket science for anyone handy with a wrench. So long as the motor sounded fine before-- I mean it's not like it's a broken timing chain or some other internal nightmare, right? Anyone--? JC
