Hi Guys,

So I came on these forums thinking I wanted a mcgregor and changed my mind so here I am again with some help this time I am working with a broker. There is a 1985 Beneteau First 305 for sale.

What I need help with is: WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR during a self-inspection?

I will have to do a buyers inspection before I buy; but, what should I check for before I make an offer? Here is my initial list:
1) Tap hull to hear the sound it makes
2) Look for blisters on the hull or cracks especially near the Mast & Pulleys (aft)
3) Open up the bottom floor and inspect for Rot (if accessible)
4) Test water pumps in the sink & toilet area
5) Run the engine (outboard and on-board) and listen for odd noises, inspect engine for wear (on belts etc.)

Here is the listing please critique: http://www.yachtworld.co.uk/boats/1985/Beneteau-First-305-2591787/United-States#.V0nzg_krLIU

Whole books have been written on this topic, but off the top of my head I'll add a couple of specifics from what's in the listing.

- An aluminum diesel tank from that vintage may be at the age where corrosion could be an issue. Try to look under the tank and in the bilge for any evidence or smells of diesel.

- The ad doesn't specify the age or condition of the sails, so they may be worn. Check to see if they still have any crispness left to them. If they're blown out figure on the cost of replacing them.

Be sure and check the keel bolts (should be stainless or non-corroded); also check for an anode alloy in good condition.

So I won't be able to inspect the bottom until I pay the dock to lift it out and get it inspected by the pre-buy inspector ($750); this would be just a cursory before pulling the boat out of the water.

Inspect anchor, chain and rode. Check the swivel and shackle to make sure stuff is not too corroded. Check all instruments.. turn on/off all items on the electrical breaker panels to make sure they work. Look at the battery charger and note brand and model #.. Look for evidence of rain water leakage around all the windows and chainplates .. look at the wire rigging for "meathooks" (broken strands that stand out from the main wire. Look at swedged fittings for rusty residue/staining. This is the fitting where the wire ends up at the turnbuckles. bring binoculars to look at the masthead fittings and rigging. a bazillion other things too ! use your phone camera and phone notes so when ya go home to think, you can review.. Good Luck, she looks like a fine boat
