Catalina 250 -
I am looking at buying a 2002 250 Catalina. I got 2 questions (ONLY!) Are they any problems with this year? Do I need a survey? I called the company who cleans bottom each month and they say boat is in great shape. Also buying from broker. What would be considered a reasonable offer to suggested price of $22000. Thanks Piseas

new boat buying

Piseas, here is my 2 cents Do I need a survey? and price of $22000, i have worked in boat yards for number of years. GET A SURVEY!!!unless you have a lot more disposable income than most of us. it will give you a base line to go from if there is any thing wrong or give you a peice of mind if nothing is found wrong. think of it as a home inspection. as for the price check around the web for comparable boat sales and start low, all he can do is say no i want more, also i do not know where you are at but winter is coming on and its a buyer market at this time of the year good luck

re survery

re the survery, I didnt mention I am buying from a Catalina broker. Dont know if that makes a difference whether or not go get a survey or not. Guess kinda like buying from a used car salesman?

re survery

piseas The way you coud look at is a surveyer will not have any thing to gain from the sale of the boat. he also could uncover a hidden problem that has been missed buy other people. I guess the best way to put it the surveryer does not have new boat fever. your insurance company will want a survey and it may get you a better rate.

Just bought one

I posted to your other message in the Catalina forum. It doesn't hurt to offer less, the broker can always say no. My broker wanted 23k and took 20k. Also, I didn't hire a surveyor. I have been a boat owner for 6 years and there isn't much that can go wrong with a 25 foot fiberglass boat in the 4 years yours has been around. Take along someone who is experienced with boats and have them take an hour or so looking at the boat. Have the boat removed from the water and the bottom pressure-washed so you can see it. Also, I have insurance through BOATUS and they do not require a survey. Nothing wrong with a survey but, in my opinion, is not needed for you if you have someone who knows sailboats to look over it. The C25/250 forums are terrific.
