currently boatless wishing Harrington Harbor North, MD
After the divorce and loosing the hunter Legend 37.5 to the extravanganza that is the settelment process I'm buying a Hunter 40.5 I have read all the owner posts and done my research IMHO. I understand that the 40.5 has a sharp dead rise and pounds in a rough sea. Other than that what should I be looking for as problem areas? The boat I'm looking at seems to be GREAT with no problems except some TLC needed on the sail covers and bimini. Thanks in advance Bill

probably nothing you don't already know

original aluminum holding tank, mast leak and the OEM charger was junk. Alot of the pounding seems to me to be a function of weight distribution as with a full fwd tank and chain in the locker, lowering the bow helps. I think you'll like the way it flies to windward Bill.

Like ours

Other then the items listed by Don, we have had no problems with ours. OK, there is one issue. There is just too many toys out there to buy for her. I started with a radar/chartplotter system, and it just seems to have grown from there. The latest was the SSB radio.

Belly Tanks

Bill, you'll love the boat. But... it's still a boat. FWIW, I've taken four seconds and one first in as many starts on distance races. I think a better suit of sails than stock & a folding or feathering prop will make the boat respond much better and point higher. One thing to watch is the belly water tanks. Just in front of the nav table and to port on the other side of the keel are a couple of built-in water tanks. Especially the one on the starboard side can leak because it gets walked on. Te solution is to get some 4200 or better, Life Caulk, and take out each of the screws and re-bed them. And, while you have the floor panels out, coat the underside with epoxy or poly to reduce moisture wicking. The easy check is to remove the bilge panels and check the edges of the floor to see if they are wet. Other than those boat things, the boat has been as trouble free as any I've owned, especially considering it's a pretty complex piece of work. But, since you had a 37.5 you already know most of this... Good luck and let us know how things work out. Rick D.
