I'm currently looking at a few Cat 30's for sale in the North East. Could I trouble any existing owners to let me know of any areas/things I should check carefully when buying a second-hand Cat-30's? Are there problems that crop up frequently? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Depends....

..on the boat age. Look for spongy decks especially aroung the mast base. Check the keel bolts, look for excessive rust. If its out of the water, blisters and the hull/keel joint connection. I would suggest a 21HP diesel , '87 or newer, fin keel, Tall rig. But most of all an accredited surveyor(SAM). Happy hunting!

I purchased one 2 years ago. Richard is on track! Also check for corrosion around the mast base and the spreaders. Take a good look at the spreaders, if they are constructed of wood check the (top) for rot and weathering. Check the wiring and main panel. If it is drydocked also check for play in the rudder and driveshaft. Check for vibrations when underway! By all means (GET A SURVEY). It could save you in the end! Go for it!!!

Thanks

Thanks for the great advice - really appreciated. I have found one recently, and an old survey talks of a small problem with the keel/hull joint - is this fatal (ie, expensive as hell to repair?) Also, if there's a little play in the rudder, any ideas what you do? This seems to occur a lot.
