Tonight our offer on an '89 c22 was accepted. It is well equipped and seems to be in good shape, however I am a novice. Is a thorough visual inspection by me enough? Or should I pay for a survey? The boat is currenly in the harbor, being sailed regularly. Thanks much.

How much are you paying?

If you're paying over 10K, I'd probably get a survey. If you don't get one, be prepared for potential problems (not that you'll have them but be mentally prepared to deal with them). LD

It's a good idea!

I recently purchased a C22 and had a survey done. I paid $200.00 for the survey but was able to negotiate the price from $3700.00 down to $2500.00. The boat needs minor work but I feel that I still got a great boat for the price and know up front where some of the boat's problems are.

LaDonna, Im paying $8400.

I dont know how much a survey on a 22 would cost around here.

I'd do it

If the boat's on a trailor, that's going to reduce your survey costs a lot. Also, since it's a small boat, most surveyors don't charge as much. Call around to a couple of insurance guys & get the names of some "reputable" surveyors & do it. As Doug mentioned, if there are any major problems, you can always revise your offer. Good luck! Yes I would

If it were me I would indeed get a survey. Doug and LaDonna make a good point, there could be room for better negoitiated price and also you would know for sure the strong points about the boat as well as the need to fix items. Have Fun, Dave LaPere :)

survey advantage

yes go for it you will only kick yourself in the stern, if something you didn't see cost you. the other big advantage, is that it gies you barganing leverage- a neutral third party to point to, and use to your advantage. the bottom line is there really isn't too much happening if the bilge is and always has looked dry. "sniff "aroung in all the compartments , look at how the owner stored his lines, fenders, battery , PFD, Coast Guard Checked? and the bottom paint(if possible)- with a trailer and motor, sounds like a good price
