Genoa Tracks
We took possession of '81 H-27 in May!!"LOTUS" is a fine sailing machine; heads upwind well, runs downwind well and motors well with Yanmar 2 GMF 15 hp.,3 blade prop. SAIL TRIM is the key to any good sailing , especially so on the Hunter 27. She rounds into the wind like it's cool and will go to irons quickly if you neglect her sheets. Proper reef and sail trim eliminate the bemoaned weather helm often referred to here. Boom vang serves its purpose upwind and as a preventer going down wind, get one on consignment like I did and save $$. The genoa is secured to the toe rail with a D-ring shackle and we upgraded to Schaeffer Series 7 blocks. The 27's decks are not wide enough to accomodate genny tracks, AND crew traffic, in my opinion. For different wind conditions i.e., to de-power or power the genny, I have 2 pairs of D -ring shackles attached to the toe rail for quick changes. She is fast too, for her sail area with my old rag sails. I will ask the Admiralty for new sails next spring. We have had her off shore in 6-8 occasionally 10 ft seas and she loved it, near Cape Lookout, NC. I change duty stations next Oct and I am debating ICW to Mayport , FL or off shore after the ditch gets us to Charleston,SC. Gas/water tankage should be fine for this near coastal voyage with stores available along the way.Great first boat for teaching the wife who loves the boat and sailing and now asks me if we are going sailing this week-end!Looking to J-Boats in the future, but right now we get the most bang for the buck with our H-27.
