I'm thinking about buying 1979 hunter 27. Are there any common problems withthese boats I should be aware of?

Catalina yes

The most famous problem with the Catalina 27 was a mis-design of the hull, which led to a bad aspect ratio of the sail plan. As a result, Catalina had to retrofit the boats with a little wooden plank off the bow. It's regarded as one of the more egregious errors of boat design insofar as it is conspicuously apparent.

Hunter 27

We bought a 1977 Hunter 27 this July. It has some big-time blister problems, but I don't know whether or not it's a common problem. We're going to deal with that this winter. If you're going to get new sails for your boat, be sure to physically measure the dimensions -- there seem to be many variations of I, J, P and E dimensions over the course of a few years. Our boat has a Yanmar SB8. It would be nice to have more power, but it runs fine. Had to replace the starter

Great Boat

And as with all boats of this age get a good survey. Check the archives, and boat reviews to learn as much as you want about the boat. A couple common problems are: Mast step compression - this is repairable. The shoal draft version does not point particularly well. Most of the other problems are normal wear and tear. Our '77 model has been a great cruising boat on Lake Erie for the past two years. The Admiral and I spent 20 nights on her last summer, including one 2 week trip. David Lady Lillie

hp..are you sure about aspect ratio on C27?

..the Catalina's have tall rig options on some models that entail the use of a small sprit. Could this be what you are referring to? The C27 is a great sailing boat and I've never heard anything about an aspect ratio problem. Rick D.

Genoa Tracks

We took possession of '81 H-27 in May!! "LOTUS" is a fine sailing machine; heads upwind well, runs downwind well and motors well with Yanmar 2 GMF 15 hp.,3 blade prop. SAIL TRIM is the key to any good sailing , especially so on the Hunter 27. She rounds into the wind like it's cool and will go to irons quickly if you neglect her sheets. Proper reef and sail trim eliminate the bemoaned weather helm often referred to here. Boom vang serves its purpose upwind and as a preventer going down wind, get one on consignment like I did and save $$. The genoa is secured to the toe rail with a D-ring shackle and we upgraded to Schaeffer Series 7 blocks. The 27's decks are not wide enough to accomodate genny tracks, AND crew traffic, in my opinion. For different wind conditions i.e., to de-power or power the genny, I have 2 pairs of D -ring shackles attached to the toe rail for quick changes. She is fast too, for her sail area with my old rag sails. I will ask the Admiralty for new sails next spring. We have had her off shore in 6-8 occasionally 10 ft seas and she loved it, near Cape Lookout, NC. I change duty stations next Oct and I am debating ICW to Mayport , FL or off shore after the ditch gets us to Charleston,SC. Gas/water tankage should be fine for this near coastal voyage with stores available along the way. Great first boat for teaching the wife who loves the boat and sailing and now asks me if we are going sailing this week-end! Looking to J-Boats in the future, but right now we get the most bang for the buck with our H-27.
