John, it's a balsa cored deck, so look closely for signs of deck fitting leakage on the interior, and signs of softness all around the deck and cockpit sole. Check for other obvious signs of wear, etc.

Thanks guys

I've seen photos of the interior and did not see the stains on the bulkhead under the chainplates that I have seen on other boats so I'll take that as a good sign. Checking for water stains and leaks is on my list. Is the cockpit sole balsa core as well as the deck? I plan to inspect under there and hopefully the drain hose as well.

Well I have the boat on the road home. It all looks good the one thing I'm puzzled about is the stainless steel compression pole that's been in the cabins of all the 222 pics I have seen. This boat does not have one. There is no evidence of there ever being one there. Could it be missing since manufacture or is it a popular mod that's been in all those pics I have seen?

John I have the 84 #222 and I don't have it either. It was put on tje later models. If you go into the posts you will see information about it from Trinka. Joe submitted it before he died.

John, according to Joe "Trinkka," the 222 has a wood compression post that is not directly under the mast. There should be a SS support from under the mast down to the wood compression post, to distribute the load. His boat did not have one, and he had one manufactured. I'm sure he has either posted pictures about this in his profile albums, or he has written an extensive post about it. I know I've read about it, but I can't say where for sure...

Long story short. I made an offer on a 222 that didn't have the support, but the deal fell through. I did contact Rudy at D&R Marine and questioned him about this support. He told me it was retrofitted to compensate for mast compression issues due to the post location. You might want to call him. By the way that particular boat showed signs of deck compression, gel coat cracks at the mast tabernacle and some water damage. Make sure the mast tabernacle bedding is sound and there is no leaking. Core damage is likely if so.

I spent the day going through the boat. We put the water hose on it and got inside to look for leaks. The only water coming in is near the front hatch. I don't think it's a gasket issue I think it's the hatch itself that's leaking. I will need to do the test again to be sure of the source. There seems to be a little bit of compression in the cabin roof under the mast and some stress cracks around the step. It's all still solid but I want more support there before I step the mast. I found some CU pics of the SS compression post in on of Joe's threads. There was no details about the post itself the topic was the cabin sole underneath it but the pics where a big help. It looked like the center portion of the V birth (at least on my boat) will not fit with that second post in place. I also can't shake the notion that a SS tube bolted to the tabernacle through the cabin top is a good way to invite a lighting strike right down into the cabin. I'm thinking about fabing something in wood that would add support directly under the step, I would also like a way to apply upwards pressure to the roof in that spot so I can take back the few millimeters of compression that has occurred there.

Glad to see you got her home safely. I'm always nervous the first time I move a new boat/trailer.

I've noticed the hatch on mine leaks a little when I clean the boat. It doesn't leak when it rains. I guess because the water from the hose hits it at an angle.

Yea it was a slow trip home lots of stopping to check the load, putting a hand on the hubs to check they're not getting too hot and air pressure etc. There's a lot of flex in the tongue, I put an old tie down on the bow eye but it snapped in a few miles so I just left it alone after that and the boat did not move an inch.

John - I have a 1985 O'Day 222 with a little different design mast step support. It is basically an "L" shaped piece fabricated from aluminum. It provides support to the cabin top from the wood post forward to the mast step without interfering with headroom in the forward berth. Here's a drawing of the support and a couple of pictures. Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Dale

Thanks Dale that looks really strong and well made. I've got a solution in the works using teak that basically mimics the factory SS post. I've got it ready to install after an afternoon running back and forth between the table saw and boat. Now I just need some hardware and a little time, hopefully this weekend

Awesome boat that 222. Bought my 1984 222 in 2012. 2 good years so far. No problems except broken rudder. Traded up to a solid rudder from Rudy. I have the S'S support post. My deck has been rebuilt under the mast. P O did a great job with that. We keep the boat in a slip for 7 months a year with no issues. We did recover the cushions and redid the rails on top with teak from Rudy and also replaced the fore stay. Rudy is the man on these boats. No doubt. Most fun I have had for 3400$ in a long time. We sail it hard about 40-50 times times a year. Enjoy.

John - Looks good. Beautiful wood. Keep us posted on how the installation goes. The nice thing about this forum is the exchange of how to address projects.

Take care,

Dale

Well I got the second compression post In. I had to rethink the top "plate" because it started to split along the Grain as I started to put some torque on the thru bolts to the step. I considered two pieces of marine ply glued together with the grain at 90 deg. as a replacement. But instead I backed a new piece of teak with aluminum plate. I also got a little more realistic with the offset of the post to the port side of the plate. It's now lined up with port side step bolts and it fits much better. I took as much slack out of the "system" ( I guess we have to call It now) as I could with a car jack before bolting the new post to the existing one. It all feels solid. I still have a small leak at the forward hatch, I think I will have to R&R it to find the problem.

Oops that would be the other port (starboard) side for that offset!! Do we turn right or left here dear?

John, I'm afraid my hatch is developing a leak as well. Mine seems to be between the smoked plexi and the frame, as opposed to a leak around the gasket, or a leak around the mounting flange. Since I am getting a tube of Dow Corning 795 black sealant for my side windows, I will see if I can address the leak using that , rather than another $350 (or thereabouts) for an all new hatch. Or at least forestall a new hatch for another season or two...
