Buyer looking for Help /Advise

Hi All,I am looking for advise / information on the Catalina 22 mkII. I just sold my MacGregor 26 and would like to get something smaller. I have been interested in the C22 for a long time and I think this might be the year I buy one. Is there a website or a book that compares the 3 keel designs (wing, Fin, and Retractable) and the different variations over the years ? This will be a tailor boat so ease of trailering is a must. I would think the fin keel would be the least tailorable of the 3. What about performance between the different keels. Are there any years / variations to avoid ?Sorry for all the questions but if someone could point me in the right direction for this info it would be greatly appreciated.ThanksGeorgegblass1@yahoo.com

1986 and Newer

Two summers ago I bought a 1986 C22 not knowing anything specific about various catalina models except their good overall reputation. After purchasing the "Handbook" from Catalina Direct. I learned that I may have "lucked out" by getting a 1986 because most of the "retrofits" they suggest are on pre-1986 models. I seems that 1986 was a turning point year in improvements. There may be other (later) years where this is true.

on the post '86. Actually, I think the wing didn't come out til about Dec of 86 (generally, I think of the wing keel only being available for '87s but I think a couple of '86s may have had them.The wing may not be your deciding factor (me, I wouldn't leave home without a Wing). I think '87 was the year that the forward hatch went from the solid cover to a see-through plastic -- very nice when sleeping in the V-berth. I don't think there were a lot of chances from the 86-87 change until the total overhaul in ninety something when the Mark II came out.Good luck,Brad on the Willy T

my Catalina 22 Mk2

Mine is a year 2000, has the "saltwater package" of lights, swimladder etc. It is a swing keel,poptop, which I really wanted for trailering and launching at less-than-great marinas. Loaded and on the trailer it weighs 3500 or less so tows well without dual wheels or special brakes. It rigs in about 40 minutes.For two persons you have a great little weekender although I have stayed on it myself for two weeks, excellent multiple use of space below. The open concept is a good thing altho it does not look as "yachty" as the 22's with the dedicated sinks, cupboards, tables etc. As a sailboat it does well, points well if you take the time to tune the rigging, handles rough stuff OK, motors well with a 6 hp, heaves to well. The entry market is flooded with boats this size, some waterballasted, some daysailers. This one is traditional, works, easy to get parts for, sails well, resells well, has fleet organizations, and will handle any lake and sensible sailing on the coast.You will notice the cabin space difference from the Macgregor.

22mkII wing keel

compared to the older C22 modells the 22mkII is totally different (better) boat. much roomier, lots of storage etc.the wing keel allows for easy trailering (see foto) and avoids all the problems related to swing keel operation and maintenance. the trail-rite-trailer comes with an extension.thomas
