I have posted on here before and I notice that everyone that rebeds their Stanchions and other thru deck repairs is using Butyl tape. My question is where to buy this Butyl tape? When I looked at Catalina direct they didn't offer it.

Thanks, Gary

You can get a good quality butyl tape at most electrical supply houses.

Not all butyl tape is the same. RV's / electrical supply / big box stores etc.
You might want to read the article on the website Arf recommended:

I found some life time butyl caulk (white) at Lowe's in a tube. I used it three years ago and had to remove the parts recently. It was very tough to remove and was still flexible. I was not successful in finding a good butyl tape so tried the above. I would use it again on the boat.

It's not widely available, and quality varies when you do find it. A source of some good butyl is: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/butyl_tape
And please read the instructions for use here: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/rebedding_hardware

There are literally hundreds of grades of tape sold as "butyl" out there some of them even being water soluble, which makes them impossible to be butyl tape. Still they are sold as such. Some also barely even stretch before fracturing. This means when pressed thin it takes very little movement, if any at all, to create a leak point failure.

Bed-It Tape has passed my intensive marine testing with flying colors from hot creep testing to cold weather failure testing, deck staining testing, to cleaners and weather resistance testing. There are really very few tapes on the market that are truly suitable for long term marine use...

Bryd, just save yerself some grief and buy it from Maine. By the time you go thru ten tubes or rolls that fail miserably, this is a one-stop..

This falls under the category of "Do it right the first time"

Buy it from MaineSail. I keep two rolls on board.

You can also check with a steel building supplier. I started reading about this stuff on this web site and was wondering the same thing, where the hell do I find this stuff? The I looked at the link posted in this thread and realized that I had a box full of this stuff left over from building my shop. They use it for sealing the corrugated roof panels on a pre-fab steel building. When I bought mine they gave me a huge box full of rolls, and I only used about 2/3 of it. I probably have 20 more rolls left! One of these days I'll actually take the time to strip everything off my deck and use it too!

Ordered from the Maine Marine website I don't think I will ever need as much as I bought, but hey if it means no headache repairs and no worrying what the hay! Thanks again for all of you taking time out to inform me.

Gary,

#1 It lasts for a VERY, VERY long time making it far less costly than those un-used portions of 4200, 5200 etc. that kick off when not used quickly...:)

#2 Tell your friends and share the love....;)

This may seem an odd place to ask the question but the flavor of this thread brought it to mind.

Somewhere in the past I read the forum guidelines composed by Maine Sail. Where can they be found?

Neil, look at the top sticky on any board here. It is one of the best written ones I've ever seen. Now...if some folks who post questions would only read it...

Thanks Stu. Right in front of my eyes and I couldn't see it. It's a must read for every member and doesn't hurt to reread it occasionally.

Sorry to pollute this thread with the question. Back to your regularly scheduled product endorsements.
