Butyl tape

I am making a gasket for my engine cover on my 1981 Hunter 36. Others on the site have told me to use butyl tape. I called a local place in Pensacola and advised him of what I was going to do with the stuff. He said that it would melt and not hold up to the heat. Any ideas on where to get this stuff? I was told Lowes and Home Depot didn't carry an industrial strength butyl tape.

If it is a cover you need to periodically remove, then Butyl is not the right gasket. Closed cell foam tape may be better.

Can you give more details/photos?

BTW, for the best Butyl, contact MaineSail. His is cheap and is the best I have ever used.

You're talking about the cabinetry around the engine? I don't think that is a good place for butyl--it's sticky and meant to stay stuck down. I assume your remove the cover from time to time.

I used some EPDM weather seal on the cabinetry cover over my engine. Got it at the hardware store.

The local place is referring to the cheap crap that they sell in RV stores and some stuff that is used in the automotive business.

I have been using the MS butyl and there is no oozing after more than a year. I used it on my aluminum Lewmar opening ports and under my stanchions. I can see the stuff around the edge but it has not moved.

I think we get much hotter in the Sacramento, Ca (100-115 deg) area than you see in the Fl. area.

In fact, I just ordered some - been meaning to do it all winter, and now that I'm putting a compass into a bulkhead, it's a chance to give the stuff a try under low-demand conditions.

Wow that was quick! I just put the order in less than an hour ago! Thanks!

Got the compass fitted, and just need some sealant before finishing the job. Butyl tape sounds like just the right stuff for this. Next up is chainplates, and some other deck hardware.

No one gives a crap if that stuff on the roof moves around. When you try to get butyl off your non-skid you will care.

I think if you do some research on MaineSail's research you will see some of the issues that he encounted when looking for a product that was adequate for the use on a boat.

rythmsurfer is probably asking about the fiberglass engine cover in the cockpit floor?? Butyl will work but it will be a bugger to get the thing open again.. .. as Tim said, closed cell foam tape is probably best there.. ??

I don't think that it is that difficult to remove anything from the butyl. I am not sure how often anyone would want to lift that cover. On the Hunter 30 not all of them had that cover and the engine could be accessed from the salon.

I belive it would be more difficult to remove a properly sealed cover if it it was caulked in with something like 4200, or LifeCaulk.

I'd stay away from the black stuff. It does make a mess. I tested a piece on the hood of our white work van. Stuck it there for 2 days then pealed it off. It leaves a black ring around ware it was and it seems to separate and become finger prints. (Messy)
I still have a chunk of the grey stuff on the hood. It will come off and leave a bit of a ring BUT it comes right off by dabbing the chunk onto the ring. I've taken it off and re stuck it a few times. Its beeen there since march...
If you want to remove the grey stuff from your anti slip WD40 worked well on my Mac26D.
