Butyl tape question

I have a stubborn hatch that continues to leak even though I re-bedded it twice (with Life Caulk). I think the problem is that the coach roof is slightly curved at that location and the bedding compound doesn't get a good continuous seal. I bought some butyl tape from you, and wanted to give that a try. It is a small hatch about 1 ft. by 10 in.

The Lewmar hatches have a channel in the middle, so I wanted your advice on the best way to lay down the butyl tape for a good seal. Do I use three pieces (each side plus one in the middle) or is this too much? Any special trick for hatches?

Thanks.

You many need to build the appropriate thickness with two layers of tape. If you can send/upload a picture of the hatch groove I can better identify the best way to seal it..

I will try to attach the Lewmar bedding instructions. If they do not attach, it is located at http://www.lewmar.com/\assets\img\d...atch Portlight Fitting Guide from Web2010.pdf

See figure 12 on page 9 and the equivalent portlight at figure 7 on page 11. When upside down, there are raised areas on the inside and ouside of the frame, as well as raised areas around the screw holes. I always try to ensure counter sinking on the screw holes are adequate. This is the best I can send you on a rainy morning in the S.F. Bay Area.

Thanks.

According to the instructions you are supposed to build up uneven areas where the hatch mounts with FRP (epoxy sticks better) to make the mounting surface flat.
