I am curious to find out how the sailboats at Burnt Store Marina faired during the hurricane this past month. Was there extensive damage? Was it wind or surge that caused the damage. When we were there in December it appeared to me that the marina, because of the way it was layed out, could handle severe weather.

There was a post...

...on here last week, and picture, of Burnt Store Marina. Check the archives. I have a friend with a townhouse there and fortunately, his unit survived and damage, except for losing his back screen door. The building fared well, but all the shrubry was blown away. It was built post-Andrew (new building codes). There was a lot of phone & power outages. There were also a couple of sinkings in the marina and a lot of broken lines. Check out the post.

Punta Gorda pictures

The following is a quote from Bob Carpenter, Spokesman for the Charlotte County Sheriff's Department, in an article in the Sun=Herald this morning: "pretty much all of them are damaged. A lot of boat owners took their boats out of the water and inland, as they were instructed. Those brought inland were destroyed, and most of those left in the water sank." If you want a first-hand look. spend a little bit of time looking in the "Hurricane Charley Photo Galleries" section in this link: http://www.sun-herald.com/ Keep in mind that a boat could have sufficient damage to be a total loss and still be floating.

From an "on-board" survivor

This web site link is from an on-line acquaintance from Punta Gorda, that chose to stay on his boat during Charley. Please note, this is NOT an endorsement of what he did, but I spoke with him via email, and he took extreme measures to prepare his boat, and I think the link is definitely of interest.

all one now

Punta Gorda and Pt. Charlotte have always been like power boaters vs. sail boaters. After Charley we all gelled as one wounded family. All boats are damaged even if it is just the sand blasting of fiberglass and roof shingles. Those below the eye got some surge, those above got more wind, all got a solid dose of reality. The canals in Pt. Charlotte have numerous boats with moderate to severe damage but to my suprise just a few sunk. As someone else said before, preparation was the key. We spent years working on a plan, it paid off on Friday the 13th. Next time I'll do the exact same thing.
