Has anyone been able to calculate the burn rate in gallons per hour for the 4JH3-TE at about 2800 rpms? I've only been able to run half a tank of fuel through mine so far, and much of that time I've been idling at anchor to charge the batteries. Thanks.

John on the non-turbo 4JH3E

I was getting .75 gal/hour when mutiday cruising running at about 2800, included some idle time achoring and docking.

Burn Rate on the Yanmar 56HP

John, On a trip from Portsmouth, RI to Annapolis, MD on a 40.3 Jeuneau 2-1/5 years ago I kept a detailrd Nav record and had the following for the Yanmar 56 HP 4 Cyl engine. I think it was the non TE engine. at 2500 RPM 0.66 GPH at 2650 RPM 0.84 GPH at 2700 RPM 0.87 GPH at 2750 RPM 0.99 GPH This was with about 100 engine hours - new boat. It would become more as the Mixing Elbow ages and 'cokes' up in about 5 years or so.

4JH3-TE in a h450

On our 450 with the same engine (75 hp Turbo)and hull, we run at about 2,500 rpm and average about 1.3 gals./hr. I would expect that at 2,800 rpm you will be apporaching 2.0 gals./hr. We have a 3 blade MaxProp and at 2,450 to 2,500 rpm we average 7.2 to 7.7 kts. (thru the water)w/ smooth water. Above this speed we are appoaching hull speed and building the "wave", which requires greater energy (power) and thus greater fuel consumption. This information has been based upon, on over 1,900 engine hours & 12,000 miles of crusing p.s the generator appears to use about 0.25 gals./ hr. (a Kohler 8 kw). Hope this helps. 4JH3-TE Fuel Consumption

I would agree with Gordon's numbers. I use 1.4 gal/hr at 2800 RPM on our 456. Dave S/V Quiet Wings

Yanmar's info

If you click this link from Yanmar & choose the "Technical Specifications pdf overview" you'll find a graph of fuel consumption v. rpms. So, how do you like the boat?? I'm still waiting for your review!! Please tell all.

ouch! (and thanks)

Melanie's link to Yanmar's chart confirms Gordon's estimate that at 2800 rpm I'll be getting just under 2 gph.(In other words, I'm consuming more than twice the amount of diesel used by my old H410 (4JH2E)at cruising speed while only going about a knot faster.) Not quite ready to review the boat. I'm taking her back to the dealer tomorrow to get the first punch list full of warranty work taken care of. Twice now we've been able to sustain speeds of 9.5 knots STW on a close reach, which is great, but she seems a little tender compared to the 410. Gotta love those quiet flush heads, though. More later.

Not sure I believe chart

I just checked the Yanmar charts, and it looks like I should be burning almost 2 gal/hr on my 410 4jh3 engine at 2800, which is more than twice what I use. What gives?

Steve - a 4jh3-WHAT

The 4JH3-TE is a Turbo-Charged 75 hp engine. I don't think that in a h410 you have the 75 hp Turbo, therefore you will burn less fuel.

I know , but

The chart I was looking at from the yanmar site for my engine (non turbo) seems to be greatly overestimating my actual consumption.

John, I very much noticed that my 460 burned more fuel then my 380 did. Enroute to Mexico I had to fuel the 380 in Santa Barbara. Made the same trip on my 460 and also had to fuel in Santa Barabara. Can't recall the fuel capacity of the 380, but was somewhat dissappointed with fuel consumption with the 460. Very little gain in speed. As a side note. Engine access on the 380 was excellent, with the 460 there is no access. Good luck with your boat. I do enjoy mine.

.7 gallon per hour

Good day, Last september (2005) I leaved Champlain lake in Vermont for the Bahamas. Has you probably know I did a lot of motor during this trip and I burn around .7 a gallon per hour with my 4JH3. Good luck Gilles
