Abe, Remember the legal penalty for

B&E is never death. But the legal penalty for homicide is sometimes death and very often many years of confinement. Call any Lawyer and ask what it will cost to defend a home invasion killing. I doubt that you can afford it.

minor issues; major resolution

We have had minor issues with gas thefts at our marina and will be installing a video survellience, (connected to the internet) near the roof top of the yacht club house. A sign at the dock will state that people have already been photographed and the signal transmitted remotely. Hopefully that fact will keep most would be thiefs at bay. The real reason for the marina cam, is so that we can check on lake conditions from home as we also hope to link it to a weather sensor, (wind direction and strength, temperature, etc).

ENTRY ALARM

I HAVE HEARD THAT BURGLARS, I DONT KNOW IF THE SAME APPLIES TO PIRATES, DO NOT LIKE NOISE. THE REASON BEING THAT THEY DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO SNEAK UP ON THEM UNEXPECTEDLY. MAGNETIC SWITCHES THAT CLOSE THE CIRCUIT WHEN THE MAGNET IS SEPARATED FROM THE SENSOR, AND A PRESSURE ACTIVATED MAT SECURED TO THE COCKPIT FLOOR IN FRONT OF THE COMPANIONWAY. BOTH HARDWIRED TO A PAINFULLY HIGH DECIBEL ALARM SIREN, FLASHING STROBE LIGHTS, AND THE MINI HALOGEN FOG LIGHTS POINTING DOWN FROM THE SPREADERS, ALL WIRED THROUGH A SEPARATE 12V DRY CELL BATTERY, HARD TO FIND AND HARD TO SHUT OFF IF YOU DONT KNOW THE SYSTEM. RUIN THEIR NIGHT VISION AND GIVE THEM A HEADACHE, MAYBE THAT WILL BE ENOUGH OF A DETERRENT FOR THE THIEVES TO LOOK ELSEWHERE. I HAVE A PRETTY SIMPLE ALARM SYSTEM ON MY HOME, WHICH I SET UP AFTER I GOT HIT. THAT WAS ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO. MAYBE THE BLINKING RED L.E.D. IN THE WINDOW HELPS, BUT NO PROBLEMS SINCE. I HAVE TO ADD, THOUGH, THAT I BELIEVE MY BEST PROTECTION COMES FROM MY FATHER IN HEAVEN, AS LONG AS I DON'T FORGET TO SET THE ALARM (ASK).

Nice idea

Flashing lights and noise from the spreaders. That's a great idea. Neither the lights or noise would be blocked by neighboring boats. Everyone within a wide range would see and hear it and someone would be sure to respond if even out of curiosity. I can't imagine anybody hanging around after all of that pointing to them. Shouldn't take a lot to install either. Sounds like the best idea so far. Oh yea, Baltimore's finest wont lock you up for having it either.

Yep, that's what I started out asking about...;)

hooking the spreader lights up to an alarm, like a motion sensor lights around a house. Nice to see a thread go full circle through the guns/ammo and self help discussions back to square 1! In research theory, that indicates we've covered the known topics, or there is no real answer. Most things I see are motion or glass break activated, neither of which will really work on a boat - it seems to me. Being far short of an electrical engineer, building my own is not an option either. I'm going to try the WM alarm and see if that gives any comfort.

Don, Make life easy for yourself

Go to any home store or Radio Shack and enquire about wireless burgular alarms. There are more variations than you can imagine for every conceivable need. You can set up to activate the system when a hatch is opened. That way there is no power draw when everything is secure. Open a hatch and the system comes to life and you can have any combination of bells and whistles and lights and cameras that your heart desires.

Ross's suggestion

Don I'd go with Ross's suggestion but ask if you can hook up spreader lights to flash with the alarm. That way you'd have a visual as well as audible alert.

Flare Dispenser

Sounds like a good way of using all those expired flares we have around the boat. I know they are impact primed but I wonder if they can be set off electrically as well? That would get much more attention than a couple of lights.

Trip Wire Alarm

Check this website for various systems: I like the type that flash and ruin one's night vision. You do NOT want to set it off accidently in the dark  Rick Webb: The 12 guage unit will set off flares as well. Imagine what a couple of them together would do

Sometimes it's simpler to refer to equipment that is already being manufactured rather than reinventing the wheel. Based on someon'es suggestion regarding noise, and in researching a current "real work" design, try this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102584&cp=2032060.2032330.2032341&parentPage=family

Strobe lights and cameras will provide a

photographic record of the intruder. Posting the pictures in prominent places and with the police will not only deter repeated attempts but will likely lead to an arrest. Multiple strobe lights inside and outside the boat will get a good deal of attention when combined with a sound signal.

You might

have some fun with a game trail camera. They're available at big box sports stores in many variations. Most are digital now and some are infrared. Just a thought. Danny

Good Idea Dan

One of those 0.49 glow plugs is just about the right size. I wonder though if it will transfer enough heat to set off the percusion primer on the flare. The other link from Paul would be perfect. Attach it to the slider on on the hatch and WOOSH! It would be fun to attach to a friends car with about a 20' tether, just enough room to reach the street and then BANG!

Ross..........

Aren't you afraid that the strobe will alert him to the presence of the camera so he can steal that too?

Use multiple strobes and place the camera in a

secure enclosure. You need onlt a small hole through a bulkhead for the lense and the camera can be mounted in a strong box that requires tools to open.

I'm alarmed...

Got the unit at WM that I linked at the very beginning. Real easy to use and kind of neat, it detects infrared heat. I can stand in the head and wave around the bulkhead and it will sense my hand but none of the other movement in the boat - wind has been howling for past 24 hours, so there was lots going on inside. So it's perfect for detecting an intruder - just exactly what I wanted. But, as someone pointed out, the alarm really isn't loud enough to do much, especially now now that it's winter. You can sort of hear it, but when it's 7 degrees, no one on the dock is going to give it much attention. And, in the summer everyone has their a/c going, so that's not going to help either. So, I don't think this is the solution I was hoping for, unless I can figure a way to link it to other equipment, etc. I looked around HD/Lowes and a few other stores but didn't find anything. Everything detects motion, which isn't going to work well in a boat (I may try just to prove that theory.) Radio Shack is a good idea, I will do that this weekend. I'm now thinking that I like the idea of a swtich in a mat that will turn on lights and maybe a horn is a good idea. So, I'm going looking for that too. Oh yeah, if anyone here knows my boat, go onboard AT YOUR OWN RISK. I took a few of the less politically correct suggestions here too...;)
