There is more mass below the ballast tank than above the ballast tank so I would conclude that it will always stabilize to the position shown.

Eyeballing it vs ??

The ballast is also not centered left and right so there will be a list with the left side down. But that is just eyeballing it. Not very convincing to the engineer in me.

How could we determine what would be the actual equilibrium position:
RE: depth of the CG?

RE: angle on the keel?

Curiously enough that is why there are tow tanks. Lots of this stuff is so complicated that the ONLY way to test your design is to build a scale model and tow it around etc.

The engineer in me would want to do more than be a blind man with a Rubix cube however

Bill, When I rebuilt Bietzpadlin I figured that they had gotten the hull and deck balanced about right so I paid attention to where I put what when I started installing the galley, and the water tanks, and the propane locker and batteries. I didn't have much choice with the engine or the anchor but when we put her in the water after ten years of planning and doing she floated on her lines. I was pleased. Since water and fuel are consumed I put those tanks on the center line as is the holding tank. It wouldn't be a good plan to put the holding tank starboard and the fresh water tank port. After about a week I would have a definite list to the starboard.

Bill here is an engineering question for you to ponder. 1/4 steel plate weighs about 12 pounds per square foot so a one foot cube would not float but at what rate would it sink? Feet per second or what ever. Would the orientation of the faces affect the rate? would it sink on an even keel or tumble? Please don't stay up and try to work this out but I suspect that it is the sort of question that you have faced in the classroom.. Since the weight of the steel is approximate I would also expect the answers to be approximate if any came out. I suppose that I could work this out but the answer won't be of any use. Oh yeah, a 14 inch cube would just barely float.

Hydro DYNAMICS vs STATICS

I'm a civil engineer. We design stuff so it will not move. Then we run water through it. The whole idea of moving a solid through fluid is not something that I've ever studied.

Statics is common to both but dynamics takes on a decidedly different flavor once you get water outside of a pipe or open channel.

I would suspect that there is a formula for the friction on a flat plate that could be applied but I don't know it.

the basic energy equation would look like

energy released from the weight falling = energy imparted to the water in the form of heat and change in velocity.
