Bunk Boards

My 1985 Mac 22 has spent all its' life on the trailer when not being sailed. My boards seem to be sagging too much between the points where bolted to the trailer. I called Macgregor and talked to a fellow who's been there forever (when my boat was built). He said the boards are contoured to the boat at the factory and that I should not worry about the bow unless excessive  and that I should be careful about using straight 2x6's.

Where the boards bolt to the trailer the hull is taking on a significant indent:cry:. Further investigation on the inside shows the fiberglass support between the hull and the inside shell is buckeling:eek:. I am going to remove boat from trailer (take the load off these four locations) and try to reduce the buckle while beefing up these support areas with more fiberglass.

I would like to replace by bunks with standard pressure treated boards from the Lowes. Maybe others have successfully use regular boards without any problems-- will the boards give enough so as to not put undue or unblanced support to the hull? Would be great to hear any experiences or advice. Thanks in advance!

I did what exactly what your talking about, worked fine. I cut the new boards to length drilled one hole and covered them with bunk carpet except for the ends. Launched the boat removed the old bunks drilled the other hole installed the new ones and finished the carpet on the ends in the parking lot. The hull shows no signs of uneven pressure. The bunks are designed to be right under the hull stingers if it's the factory trailer. Always lower the keel to take the weight off the hull when trailering.

I assume there is some flex to the bunk boards, I know there is on my V-21. Because of this flex you should elongate the holes in the wood to allow the for and aft movement of the bunk board relative to the supports on the trailer.

Even with a slight deflection of the board the ends will come closer together. I always elongate the holes about a half of an inch.

( Length of the cord circle verses the distance between the same two points by way of the circumference of the circle or curve of the circle. )

Great, thanks for you input. Going to go ahead a replace the boards. Now to decide whether to go with carpet or slides...
